    Bird sound id
Anybody able to identify this bird, or rather the sound of it? I hear it in the summer, at dusk in the meadow. It makes a low whirring or vibrating sound. I'm not sure if that is the sound of it flying or its actual call. I had thought it was the nightjar but I listened on http://www.rspb.org.uk and it is not that. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Wow- I thought that sound was woodcock, I now know I have lot of snipe roosting in the boggy fields around me. I'm a bit confused though- because at dusk I see a lot of what I think is woodcock flying to roost (and they do sound like woodcock) http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/w/woodcock/index.aspx

Could I be seeing up to 20 woodcock every evening flying in to roost in surrounding bog? Or is it more likely to be snipe?

Actually that was the confusion- just rechecked the woodcock call and I AM seeing woodcock- flying in relatively leisurely straight lines, call is a single "cheep" repeated every three or four seconds. Snipe always (I think?) fly zig-zag and very fast.
I am also hearing snipe already in the bog around me- the drumming/bleating cannot be mistaken apparently!
It may be unusual to see woodcock like this but I am fortunate to live beside some renerating cutover bog with stands of pine and willow, birch etc so it seems to suit both birds.

I'm open to correction, but it looks like a Woodcock to me? Has it been shot? The Woodcock shooting season opened a week ago I think!

It's a woodcock. Might have died from exhaustion after migration, a lot of birds only arriving now. No signs of any gunshot trauma, but would have to examine the whole bird.

there's a bit of blood on the face, but no sign of gunshot - we think it may have collided with the house.

Any ESB/phone wires over your property? And if a suburban area artificial lighting can sometimes mean that a night flying bird like Woodcock won't see the lines in time..

Quite a number seem to die from exhaustion.

I have what i thought is snipe in my area all year around. They make my heart jump every time they take to flight a few feet from me when I'm out walking.( boggy grasslands ).
Zig zagging away from me with loud cheeps. Never heard this drumming/beating sound. Am i mistaken and are they woodcock?

Sounds very much like snipe. They are in the bog beside my home all year round and, likewise I get a buzz every time one darts from in front of me. You should here drumming just at dusk on a spring evening.
