I am just about to undertake the one year J visa, my boss is very keen to keep me there and wants to get the ball rolling in keeping me there and is up for petitioning me to stay. The thing is, I just have a diploma, and am not sure if years experience falls into the category as the job I have worked for the last number of years, am not sure if its completely relevant to what he has me doing over there

A US degree (or foreign equivalent) is the minimum requirement for this visa. As long as your company can provide enough information stating that for the level of experience/education/knowledge you have, resources can't be found in this country then you should be ok. This is mostly paperwork and is handled by the lawyers (this is not a visa that can be easily filed by someone who doesn't know what they're doing).

The fact that you are going to be working for them before the visa begins is a huge help also.
