UPC Broadband / Sony Vaio Laptop - Not Connecting

    Hi all,

First time posting here (if I am posting in the correct forum), hopefully I may be able to get some help!

We recently moved from eircom broadband wireless to UPC wireless, however my sister's laptop will not connect to the new network. The laptop is a Sony Vaio (which is probably about 4 years old at this stage). The laptop runs Windows Vista.

My laptop and iPad had no problem connecting to it once the security password is entered, however once I try to connect to the network on the Vaio and enter the password, it is telling me that it cannot connect due to a "timeout error". I have tried messing with the settings after asking around and getting some advice from friends ( I would be no computer expert, but would have a decent enough grasp of the basics), but it has brought me no joy so far. So here I am on boards, seeking some advice from you good people. If anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated!!

    Cheers

Perhaps the wifi is turned off, you'd be suprised how many people accidentally switch it off (often not even knowing there is such a switch!)

If it is on, can she connect to another wifi network? Did you double check to make sure?

Is Vista handling the wifi settings on her laptop, or is it some other software? If it is other software, uninstall it

Problem is vista..it cant connect to wpa protected wifi.
Upc will tell you to change to wep...which is useless.
I would advise upgrading to windows7..which might seem crazy to some.
But there is no fix gor this in vista and never will be.

Windows Vista did have some issues with WPA encryption that has been patched with this hotfix, so I'd reccomend downloading that on another machine and seeing if it helps, also try re-creating the Wireless Network just in case the settings were inputted incorrectly at the start, see here.

Can't even remember this issue. Maybe I was still using WEP when I installed Vista first

Goes to show that windows update is a good thing :D

Thanks all for the replies, much appreciated.

Would you believe the first thing I checked originally was to see if the wireless was on, which it was, if only it were that simple!

It seems that Vista is the problem indeed, I will follow all of your advice that you have given me above.

    Cheers
