I'm buying a car at the moment and the tax is expired since March.

I'm buying privately - do I get the seller to sort it out or do I?

What exactly is involved so I don't have to back tax it?

You tax it from date of purchase on, well from the start of the month of purchase :) Not good to buy untaxed car last day of month ;)

When you buy a car you don't have to back tax it, so it's not up to anyone to do this. In fact it'd be incredibly stupid for the seller to do it as he's throwing away money.

Once it's registered in your name you can tax the car at your local MTO. Be careful though, driving the car without tax (despite just changing ownership) is still against the law and if you are stopped it's up to garda discretion what happens.

Tomorrow will be the official date of purchase. Do I need to wait for the ownership cert to come back from dept of transport or can I just go in tomorrow and pay the tax?

You'll need to wait until the car gets registered in your name (this will happen before the form comes back) which you can check on the motortax website.

It would do no harm to put a note on your windscreen with the date of sale while you are waiting for the registration cert, just in case a traffic warden decides to fine you

I'm sure if that worked everyone in the country would be chancing their arms :p

A traffic warden won't care, they'll do you for not having a disc up, I would have no fear of a Garda at a checkpoint having an issue with a recently bought car though, I wouldn't park on street with an expired or no disc if it's an area likely to have roaming traffic wardens.

Just changed my car last week, the tax was out on the car so I just put the receipt from the garage in the window.

This Morning in the post both the new Vehicle Registration Form and a motor tax renewal form arrived, with a leaflet stating that online I would only be charged from the month of purchase and not the back tax.

Here is a pic of the leaflet.
