Recommendations for a car

I might be jumping the gun for someone only after completing three hours of driving instruction but I can't wait to get myself a motor and would appreciate some advice and recommendations.

What would be your recommendations for a decent car as a first time driver still learning the ropes. I didn't come out of the tiger years with enough for a merc so I'll be looking for a second hand, up to about five grand at most. I don't really want a powerful car to begin with. The most important thing would be a smooth gear stick and a car with a bit of reliability in it.

I know it's all a bit vague, but I would love to hear peoples opinions on the best options for learner drivers.

Start with four wheels and an engine. Look on sites like www.carsireland.ie and www.carzone.ie and see how new and low milage you can get for your five grand. That said an '04 Toyota Yaris is probably running as good as an '05 Nissan Micra or an Opel Corsa. I personally don't like Fiats. The Japaneese make good cars as do the Germans. Hyundai and Kia have gotten good in recent years.

Insurance is going to be a huge factor if you have only just passed your test.
Don't do what I done 8 years ago and go out and buy an Alfa 156 1.8 the day after i passed my test, very silly!
