A Limerick man has gone on hunger strike in protest at an insurance company’s refusal to pay out on a policy for his car, which was stolen and burned out while he was in prison.
Gerry McDonagh, of Fedamore, today began picketing the AXA Insurance offices on O’Connell Street as part of his campaign to have them pay out on a policy worth €24,000 for his Toyota Auris, which was destroyed in July 2009.
Mr McDonagh began his hunger strike on Saturday, having last week told the Limerick Leader that he was prepared to die in his campaign for “justice”.
Speaking this Monday, he said that he has been on a diet of “tea and water” since Saturday, and expects to be in hospital “by the end of the week”.
Mr McDonagh claims his car was stolen and burned out while he was being held on remand for assault charges in July 2009. He was later convicted and sentenced to six months in prison.
His family previously lived in Abbeyfeale, where they were linked to assaults, shootings and arson attacks. Mr McDonagh said that he knows that one of his sons stole the car, but claims that they did not set fire to it.
It is understood that the insurance company are refusing to pay out as there is a dispute over whether or not the car has been officially reported as stolen.

I am short of a few bob. son go out there and burn our car, fcuk it I will claim off the insurance.
Why does he not claim off his son?

But if he didn't report it stolen how can he justify claiming for it being stolen? The theft sounds like it was a proximate cause of the fire. May pop in and have a burger king and a chat with this chap later in the week. :)

It sounds like he claimed that he did report it stolen.
Possibly he dailled 999 and said "That weee bastard of a son just stole the wagon"

No issue then........... If he presses charges against his son. :)

24,000 Auris? Was it bloody gold plated or something?

Sincerely hope he never gets a cent off them. There's no adverse publicity risk from refusing to pay out in extremely suspicious circumstances, so this won't pressure them.

There was once a time when a hunger strike was something dignified and to be proud of. I have a mental picture of someone who has enough fat on him for this strike to last a very long time!

I presume he informed his insurer of his change of address as required to on his policy? Perhaps there was no parking bay free outside his cell.

No wait, this is Limerick, it probably had a consignment of cocaine in the back he's claiming for as well.

It looks like he has not formally reported the car as stolen, if he does than hes son could end up in prison. But he wants his insurance company to pay up.
It looks like this criminal wants everything his own way.
Not formally boss, yes he took it but not formally boss. Ah go-on boss, ah go on boss, give me 24,000 for the auld car boss.

He claims that he also mentioned it in an incident “around 2010”, when he gave a statement to gardai while standing in a tree with a rope around his neck.

“I told them if they didn’t take my statement, I would hang myself. They took the statement when I was up in the tree with a rope around my neck.”

And save the life of this fine upstanding member of society?

Feck him. Let him starve...until he changes his mind. No way will the scumbag thug follow through on his stunt.

As has been said about hunger strikes, they were used in times o political desperation for noble causes. This twat just cheapens the others who made the ultimate sacriice.

I hope I don't come across as insensitive, but I wouldn't miss him if he was gone.

He's got a pretty warped sense of justice.

Passed by him a few times today and yesterday.
He stands out on the road with his placard, so if the hunger-strike doesn't get him a passing Truck probably will....
The local Guards also seem to be keeping half an eye on him too so probably only a matter of time before he is hauled away for obstructing traffic or something.

"Mr McDonagh began his hunger strike on Saturday, having last week told the Limerick Leader that he was prepared to die in his campaign for “justice”. "

Suggest AXA offers to pay up upon successful completion of his hunger strike as stated.

If the hunger strike doesn't pan out, at least he will have his Weight Watchers "Slimmer of the Year" title to fall back on.
