UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League Irish Rights 2012-2015

And RTE kept the live Wednesday night game for the same period

    http://thescore.thejournal.ie/three-more-years-rte-and-tv3-retain-champions-league-rights-434866-Apr2012/
Ryle Nugent, Group Head of Sport, RTÉ, added: “We are delighted to have been able to secure these rights in the current difficult financial climate in line with our policy of significantly reducing sports rights costs. We’re particularly delighted to be able to continue to deliver UEFA Champions League live coverage to fans in Ireland until 2015. In an increasingly competitive climate securing the premium package for Wednesday night matches is a significant coup for a public service broadcaster.

Good news all round for Free to Air coverage. I thought RTE would lose the Champions League, given their recent announcement about reduced funds for Sports Broadcasting Rights, and their intent to focus on domestic events. I suppose Setanta don't have the cash to compete anymore, allowing RTE and TV3 to pick up these rights on the cheap.

Not confirmed yet whether they are keeping their UEFA Europa League rights. We're to watch out for an announcement on that in due course.

    Two mod notes:

    * I'm going to change the title of this thread since it infers that TV3 have sole rights to the UEFA club competitions. In fact, the situation (so far as has been announced) is "as you were" - rights shared by RTÉ, TV3, and Setanta. (And presumably Sky).
    * You aren't allowed quote articles verbatim, so those are for the chop and will be replaced by links.

no mention of espn on any of the press releases for uefa rights meaning you will still get that dredded 08 message on thursday nights... rights not available.

ESPN are sharing rights with ITV for Europa League in Britain 2012/15. Sky and ITV Champ League.

it could mean that espn are trying to buy the irish rights to tie in with their uk rights they have purchased and setanta have lost out or it could just mean that the second choice rights havent been allocated yet.

TV3 shouldn't have it for Trevor Welch alone. Terrible commentator.

1st and 2nd choice europa league games will be on itv1 and itv4 for the next 3 seasons
    no reason to get setanta

I am sure Setanta will be showing some games not available on ITV 1 or ITV4. Would you not agree with this?

Setanta in their wisdom showed the same Europa matches as ESPN last season. And the same with a lot of Serie A & Bundesliga games.

ESPN is blocked on Sky for the Europa League so that would make sense
And the same with a lot of Serie A & Bundesliga games.

Setanta showed whatever the best Serie A game at the time was. They didn't show Bundesliga though.

The reverse is true of ITV4's coverage, however.

Regarding Europe league for next season.
This weeks match between Hearts vs Liverpool is listed for ITV4, Setanta Sports 1.
Not shown on the listings for 3e in Ireland. They did get the tv rights for next few seasons AFAIK. It could also be that the tv listings are not updated yet ?

I don't think the last qualifying round is included in the Europa League rights in the same way that they are with the Champions League. So you will have to have ITV4 (probably be blocked on UPC) or Setanta Sports 1.

Anyone know when TV3 expect to have a HD channel set up? It would be great to see the Champions League/Europa League in HD on both RTE and TV3.

...... and Setanta HD on sky.

Yeah that's the case. The Champions League rights kick in at the "Play-Off Round" (which is being played Tuesday and Wednesday) but the Europa League doesn't till the group stages. But there is a Round of 32 in the Europa League in January which the Champions League doesn't have.
