dodgy fuel pumps

What's the story with reporting a petrol station about a dodgy fuel pump, my sisters boyfriend said a friend of his told him that a forecourt in Waterford has dodgy pumps, when he was getting petrol he noticed that there was a euro run up in the pump before it started pumping the fuel and my sisters boyfriend went up and tried it also and the same thing happened. I rang the nasi but it just keeps ringing out its bad form when foreclosures are screwing people like this.

That's shocking seriously but I think it's becoming more common. As if petrol isn't dear enough ya get noting for twenty euro anymore it's unfair how expensive it's gone

My local pump has occasional issues where when the trigger is pulled it 'clicks-off' immediately.

No matter how little or much pressure is applied it clicks out immediately.

Pumping 10 litres could take 5 mins.

Would this be a mechanical fault or something more sinister?

Pull the nozzle back out a fraction.

I should of added that it wasnt the same pump that was used so i doubt there is another that my just be broke, i really think that its after being tampered with.

It's massively common and is normally caused by airlock in the filler neck, nothing to do with dodgy pumps. Just pull the nozzle out a couple of inches and rotate it 90 degrees to either side and you'll be fine ;)

Can you advise if the owners / management were approached to discuss this ?

Definitely report this station, sure if your sister's boyfriend's friend says it then it must be true. Has this actually happened to you personally or is it all hearsay?

Absolute nonsense, if a garage was going to rip you off they are hardly going to do it so stupidly when every single last persopn looks at the dials when they start pumping and every person would see it happening.

Your sisters boyfriends dog groomers aunties neighbour should just record it on his phone and have proof, not really hard to do. Unless its actually complete rubbish.

As a matter of fact he had the nozzle out of the tank just enough to see the petrol come out and low and behold it pumped nothing until the meter was at 1 euro and yes he went in and said it to the person and nothing has come of it yet so I do think that it is a dodgy pump and sure my poor sister's boyfriends dog groomers aunties neighbour isn't well up on technology so she only has an old Nokia phone so she/he couldn't record it.....silly person she/he is.

I am the owner of a filling station and I hear this complaint about once a month, also that they did not get enough in their tank,
    Firstly:
Petrol pumps will not , (despite what people think believe or heard) its is physically impossible for a pump to register without product in the line
    Secondly:
Pumps are spot checked by the NSAI constantly nowadays with people being obsessed about not getting enough fuel, I have had 2 spot checks in 3 months based on customer complaints( both which were passed, the 1st one my pump was in favour of the customer , 2nd was perfect as he calibrated it 2 months earlier costing 340 euro) NSAI seal the pump and date it , if the seal is broken on the pump, you simply get a fine and are forced to close, and it is impossible to tamper the seal
    Thirdly:
A lot of people do not realise how little there is in 5 euro of petrol ( a little over a 2litre milk can to put into prospective) so how can this even register on your car gauge
And my last point, why would a station owner be so silly in a small enough city like Waterford to tamper with pumps , like a previous thread said. " when the first thing we do is look at the pump to see it is clear"

What are you on about? Try breaking up your paragraph into sentences, it's painful to read.

The problem is that people buy petrol in euros and not in litres. I always get 35 litres so if I thought I was being ripped off I can work out what I was charged.

I have managed to fit 85L into a 65L tank;)
I complained and the owner called the gardai on me, who basically told me to fcuk off.(had the reciept and car handbook)
Admittedly that is one incident in 25 years of driving and thousands of litres of fuel.

Did you pay for the 65L?

No, had to pay for the 85L
I complained after I payed. I tried to explain that it was impossible to fit a quart into a pint pot. If she had've just said ill get someone to look at it i would have been happy. But no, got extremely defensive and then she called the guards and said I was being abusive. Plod arrived and didnt want to hear, told me to leave or he'd arrest me.......so i left!
Called customs and they said they would check it out.
    Never heard anymore.
Never went to that filling station again.

And more to the point , how could this person watch both the fuel going into the tank and the pump gauge , another impossibility!!! I would safely say 99.999% of all stations are compliant on their pumps

Well your in a minority there but not a bad idea even though at then risk of sounding patronising ,your a little over safe ( NSAI only allow .07% tolerance on 20 lts of petrol when testing our pumps, which roughly translates to about a teaspoon ) also if the seal NSAI put on the pump looks even like it was tampered with, you are reported to customs with a heavy fine

Are you selling petrol at €2.50 a litre? Because at €1.60 a litre it would be over 3 litres.

I was at my fair share of dodgy stations. When you're buying diesel at £1 a litre from a 1970s pump at the side of a shed you don't look for NSAI seals :D

I would have went inside and explained what had happened. If they refused to listen give them €110 and wish them luck.
Strange that they called the guards. Surely they stood to lose much more than €30 if the guard had a brain!

No sorry I was just putting it into prospective with an easy example, for you i will say use a 3 ltr can of milk, but you still won't see many extra miles

Well if your buying in them kind of places you can expect all is not right, you simply cannot sell something that costs £1 a litre that costs £1.02 !!

Red diesel in bulk is 65p and kitty litter is £2 a kilo :p
