    Hi all,

If you've put a deposit down on a used car, is the garage allowed 'use' that car until the sale is finalized (paid for in full)?

On Friday, I popped into the garage where I'd put a deposit on a used car to be told that it was out getting a "scratch on the bonnet fixed"! I didn't believe this, as I had a good look at the car's paintwork prior to purchase, but didn't pursue his comment further.

Anyone heard of this (carry on) before?

    Thanks.

    Hi Osi,

I would like really to believe that was the case. The place where I'm buying the car advertises: "Specialists in All Motor Repairs" and they do the likes of crash repairs, too. So I was thinking that couldn't they do that instead of sending it across the city?

If it has current tax & test there's a good chance it's on loan to a customer or a staff member is swanning around in it.

OP, if you think the garage is being dishonest then maybe you should not be buying a car from them.

Legally yes, as the car still belongs to them. To use it for any purpose not connected with the sale would be bad practice, though.

And in the event that the mileage and condition is not what you placed a deposit on the back of perhaps you should re consider your position with respects to your purchase. :)

Your worried about a car you don't own yet. Some places use customers cars as the runabout, though the majority don't.

But if you doubt the garages honesty listen to Bazz26.
