Shops selling typewriters.

    Hello,

This seems to be the best forum I can see for this type of request, and I'm wondering if anyone knows any places that might sell antique/vintage typewriters?
I'd really like to get my girlfriend one for her birthday, either a working one or one that can be easily refurbished.
I've had a look on ebay and other sites, but most of them are in the UK/USA and won't ship here or shipping is a fortune due to the weight, and with such a big item with delicate moving parts I'd worry about damage in transit.
Adverts.ie i'm wary of due to the timewasters/chancers factor.
Ideally I'd like to be able to go to a shop where I can look at the thing properly and really check the condition.
I'm in Galway, and there's a couple of antique stores I know here I can check, but I can get to Cork and probably Dublin quite easily, I just don't know which stores would be my best bet and where they are.
If anyone can point me in a likely direction I'd be thankful.

Does it really need to be in 100% working order? I mean, how often is she going to type up documents on it - and will you be able to stand the racket?

Most old typewriters and Singer sewing machines end up on the bric a brac shelves in olde worlde pubs, maybe an architectural salvage store might have a few in stock.

If I was you I'd start with adverts.ie, that's where you'll pick one up at the lowest price. You'll have a tough enough time getting ink ribbons so I wouldn't be too worried if it's in working order or not. If the hammers seem to work and the carriage return works that's probably all you need to worry about.

A county man of yours is selling this old model...

It does need to be in working order, I'm not really looking for something ornamental - I'm sure I can banish her and the racket to the spare room :P.

I'd actually already seen that one, and whatever else was on adverts.ie about a week or two ago, but most of them are knackered or well overpriced - a bit of cleaning/sprucing up is fine, but I don't want to drop a lot of money on something only to find it unfixable or more than it's worth to repair. I'm just really not keen on using adverts.ie in general.
Tried contacting some people on ebay who had similar 'may need some repair' type ads, and none of them could tell me what needed repaired or how bad it was, so I couldn't factor that into the cost. With shipping, it's a lot of money to drop on what may be a pricey doorstop :pac:

Ribbons actually aren't too hard to get hold of for many models on ebay, and I have months yet, so I can stand to wait for something good to come along, I'd just like to know the best places to look. If there really aren't any good brick & mortar places, I'll just have to keep trawling adverts.

Last warning Degsy, any deals have to be conducted on www.adverts.ie.

You offered your typewriter for sale. I'm not going to discuss moderation here on thread. Feel free to take it to feedback. There will be no offers/requests for selling or buying on thread here in the forum. You could have easily send a PM to the poster without posting about it here.

Sorry, I've been up the walls with exams and wasn't watching the thread. Do you have the typewriter on adverts.ie Degsy?

If you're in Dublin, there is the typewriter shop on Dorset St. I have bought all my machines there. The guys can be fantastic craic and really love what they do, always sort you out with something.

Interesting. Given the length of Dorset St., could you say roughly where it is and on which side of the street?
