Neck ties that I bought recently haven't been very good quality, wondering where others on here buy theirs and how much would you spend?

neck tie neck tie neck tie neck tie... sorry that's what I heard in my head when I read your post!

anyway's €20 gets you a relatively good quality tie, €40-50 gets you a branded tie (hilfiger etc etc) that in my opinion last a long time and are pretty good quality... i'm sure you can pick up a cheap tie for a fiver but it will most likely be rubbish...

    Try M&S - good variety, good quality - will run you €20 - €30.

I'm all for the slim ties. Not the ultra thin ones mind you.

Firstly you need to pay attention to the fibre composition. Always go for 100% natural fibres, most quality neck ties are 100% silk, although other common materials are Royal Irish Poplin which is 50% wool/50% silk, linen, & wool.

The finest materials are EU-made: normally English, Irish, Italian or French silks etc.

Secondly you need to note the tie construction, if you gently open the narrow end of the tie you should see a piece of white material with some stitching through it. This is the wool interlining and gives the exterior cloth its shape and drape. At the wide end of the tie about two inches above the tip you should see a bar tack stitch, this marks where the interlining ends.

Thirdly look at the trimmings used in the tie, I'm talking about the lining on the reverse and the keeper or loop where you tuck the narrow end of the tie to keep it in place. If this is made of the same material as the tie then it is a mark of a superior tie, as more material has been used, and the construction was more expensive.

A polyester/synthetic label, keeper or loop on the reverse of the tie should not really be used, the synthetic will scratch or snag silk or other finely woven fabric. If you place a fingertip over it you'll notice how abrasive it is.

As for 'brands' of ties, ignore names and find the makers of authentic products. For E30-E40 you can have a tie made in Ireland out of the finest materials, you could also have Italian or English made ties for that price.

For the maximum you can of course pay any amount, particularly where people are influenced by the name as opposed to the intrinsic quality examples include Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford, Charvet, Hermes etc. E50~250

Atkinson's are famous silk and Royal Irish Poplin weavers as well as makers of ties in Ireland, below is a link to the ties they have on offer at present for 22stg.

Also if you're based in Dublin there are two classic men's outfitters on Nassau St., Kennedy & McSharry and Kevin & Howlin. They both have ranges of men's silk, Irish Poplin and wool ties, both made in Ireland, and Germany etc. in the E35-E60 range. They may also have a discount rack or sales at times. The brands i.e. Atkinsons, Ascot, Van Buck may be unfamiliar but their quality is unquestioned.

I bought a few in M&S as well, not too bad at all, but avoid any big wide ones, there's sort of a halfway type between the wide and skinny ones that I usually go for, look the best imo.

The only problem with the Irish Poplin is that the designers are old regimental colours and there's not much of a selection.

Depending on budget you can try M&S which have some nice ones for up to £30. I really like the selection in TM Lewin too, both slim and classic with all the signs of quality mentioned previously.

If you have a look at their website you'll see Macclesfield silks, woven and printed country designs including hares, elephants, pheasants, foxes as well as colourful stripes, paisleys and ancient madder printed paisleys.

There's a well known men's outfitters by the name of O'Connell's in the US that stocks a full set of their range and you can see some great examples there http://shop.oconnellsclothing.com/atkinsons_royal_irish_poplin.php

If I'm near a TK Maxx I'll often pop in to see what they have. You can pick up a Daniel Hector or Pierre Cardin for €10 sometimes. Not amazing quality but perfectly fine for everyday wear. The odd time, you'll find a nice Baumler for around €12 which look like they'd retail for about €50 elsewhere.

I don't want to belabour the point would I would urge those interested in menswear to disregard 'brands' and focus on sourcing natural materials, construction and country of origin.

    Well wear
