I've been using Zamzar for the occassional vid on you tube that I want to convert to a wav file and it suits me fine.

But just recently I've come up against two vids and Zamzar say it exceeds there free max 100MB limit and I need to open an account.

Strange cause I never hit this wall before.

Anyway are there any free alternatives out there with a higher limit.

Any particular reason you have to download as a WAV? If you're happy with MP3 or AAC (and you're using Windows) have you given YouTubeFisher a try?

The reason I go for wav file is because I want full cd quality.

Youtube automatically compresses audio/video on all uploads, regardless of converting to wav the information is already "lost" by youtube so grabbing it in wav, flac, mp3 etc format won't make a difference

I think (I stand to be corrected) a bitrate of 320kbps+ is near CD quality, any lower is not, so if Itunes music is encoded for 128/192kbps it is not CD quality. You cant go from 50kbps to 320kbps and have good quality, totally impossible as the data has already been lost in the compression :)

Depending on the youtube video quality you were using, the best bitrate you would have got was 152kbps from the 720p vids and above.

    Looky here vvvv

256kbps on Itunes since 2009 (ish)
    What is iTunes Plus?

iTunes Plus is the new standard on iTunes. iTunes Plus downloads are songs and music videos available in our highest quality 256 kbps AAC audio encoding (twice the audio quality of protected music purchases), and without digital rights management (DRM). iTunes Plus music can be burned to CD as many times as you need, synced to any AAC-enabled device (such as iPod, iPhone, or Apple TV), and played on any Mac or Windows computers you own.
How much does iTunes Plus music cost?

iTunes Plus songs are available at one of three price points. In the U.S. the pricing is 0.69 USD, 0.99 USD, or 1.29 USD each. Other countries have similar song price points. Check your country's iTunes Store for pricing.
Can I upgrade previously purchased music to iTunes Plus?

Yes. Any available upgrades will be shown on the Upgrade to iTunes Plus page. You can upgrade all of your items at once by using the Buy All button. This replaces all eligible previous purchases with iTunes Plus versions of the same items. You can also choose to make individual upgrades by clicking the Buy button to the right of each item. Song upgrades are available for 0.30 USD, video upgrades for 0.60 USD, and albums for 30 percent of the album price. The counter to the right of the "Upgrade to iTunes Plus" link in the Quick Links box will indicate when additional eligible content become available.
You can view your eligible iTunes Plus upgrade items.

Can I still buy music encoded at 128 Kbps with Digital Rights Management (DRM)?

Music on the Store available in iTunes Plus will no longer be available as 128 kbps and with DRM.
Is there a change in video quality for iTunes Plus videos?

No, the video quality remains the same. iTunes Plus means that the music videos are offered DRM-free and with our highest-quality audio within the video, 256 kbps AAC.

    192kbps is grand.

+1 agreed completely. Didn't realise iTunes is no longer DRMed either!

For most speakers you will not know a difference between 192kbps and 320Kbps or even ape or flac. but listen to it using high quality fiber optic cables into good speakers and the difference can be enormus..

So is there zero gain in my saving the audio from youtube vids to wav format which is massive rather than mp3.

No point, WAV is best suited storing original uncompressed audio. Use MP3.

Zero gain... You'll probably find the audio in youtube clips is poor anyways, intentionally by the record companies, anything 128kbps+ should be ok for most listeners, anything less and you'll notice the difference in quality more than likely. The audio quality from the HD Stream will likely be better, but still heavily compressed.

If you plan editing/mixing the audio files then convert to WAV, do all your edits/mixes and save the final mixdown to WAV to maintain the original quality of the converted files. Most audio editors will convert to a raw format for the duration of the edit but will save back to the original file format when saved. This will reduce quality further each time it's saved.

Convert the clips to WAV once downloaded if you intend editing, load the WAV files, do your edits then save the final mix to whatever format you require, preferably a raw format.
