Freesat questions

    Hi,
I have been doing some reading about Freesat and I just have a few questions, apologies if they are ones that come up time and time again.

    1) What is the long term prospects of Freesat? Do we know how long it will be in operation or could they shut it down next year for example?

    2) What is the typical cable run method? I have two TV roomsfront and back on the south wall of the house, I could put a SE facing satellite on this wall. So do they bring the cable low down on the external wall and then go through? Or do they take it into the attic and go down through the walls?

I would get an installer to do it but he would need to be extremely, extremely neat and conscious of appearances. The neighbours have a black cable running arseways from the satellite dish, hanging over the tiles, down a white drainpipe and it looks awful. Same for inside, I wouldn't want some cowboy in wrecking the walls and making a mess of the place.

    3) What is a good combo box? I don't have any interest in PVR or channel guide but I definitely want one that keeps the channels up to date. Also one of them would need to service and old (analogue) TV but the main TV has HDMI.

    4) Is an outdoor aerial strictly necessary for the Irish channels? I get Saorview reception on a small bedroom TV with internal aerial and it seems okay..maybe glitches a bit when you walk past.

    5) Is there any kind if wireless setup that doesnt involve running cables through walls etc?

    Thanks

FreeSat is a joint venture between ITV and BBC. It aint going away anytime soon ;)

Its your house so you can have the satellite anywhere you want (within reason to point south-east)

As for wanting things to look neat? just think logically. If you have the dish installed on the south-east side of your house. Then multiple wires would be entering the room via that point. To be distributed from that room.

With my set-up, I have a soarview aerial and satellite on my roof. I got the installer to put the wires under a roof tile and into the attic (5 wires in total - quad LNB and aerial cable going into the attic) From there they distribute nice and neat from the attic.

1, Most satellite boxes come with both HDMI and SCART outputs. Your analogue tv should have a scart.

2, Bit of a problem tho. Official 'freesat boxes' will auto-update with new channels. Unofficial boxes, aka 'free to air' and also 'combo boxes' will not update themselves as new channels become available.

On the aerial you currently use you recieving the analogue signals of Rte1, RTE 2 etc. Analogue is going to be switched off later this year (october if memory serves me correct) Soarview is digital and as such come post-october 2012 you will need a proper aerial (outdoor recommended) + soarview box or built in soarview television to recieve.
    5) Is there any kind if wireless setup that doesnt involve running cables through walls etc?

Dont over complicate things mate :) Just run a standard coax cable through your rooms :)
