Does anybody know if the Irish channels are going to have announcement displayed on the screen explaining to there license paying customers that the analogue TV service is been switch off on the 24/10/2012, and the only way is to switch to a saorview tv service.

It would make more sense having a rolling display across the screen, on fair city or the News.

Probably have a Bikini clad Blonde walking across the screen (like in boxing matches) carrying a sign.

They did something along those lines when the RTE Radio Medium Wave radio transmission was being shut down and it also happened when Today FM switched their Dublin FM frequency a few years ago.

The message basically was along the lines of: 'if you can hear this message, please note that transmission on this frequency will be closing down soon and you need to retune'. Can't see any technical problem doing the same with the analogue TV service.

I read somewhere on these forums, that RTE have said they will start displaying a shutdown message on the analogue channels from June 4th.

According to the people from Saorview at a discussion in Carlow IT recently from Mon June 4th the analogue channels will carry warnings regarding analogue switchoff

The Talk in IT Carlow was very interesting. It wasn't for the end use public, but about the entire countrywide rollout and how the system works etc. from an engineering perspective.

They said from June 4th 2012 all analogue transmissions will start to carry warnings "upgrade or else" etc

We were told at a trade meeting in Cork recently that RTÉ NL will add a banner to analogue broadcasts informing viewers of switch off date and that they will have to take action by then , starting in May during ad breaks at peak times, increasing in frequency, finally constant for the last couple of months.

Cable TV operators providing analogue channels will have to change over to Saorview boxes (or their own digital STBs) into a modulator for each of the 4 Irish channels at their headend, - soon - to avoid their viewers seeing these announcements!
I suspect analogue cable viewers will then loose NICAM stereo (as NICAM modulators are very expensive)

It would cause considerable confusion if cable TV viewers see such announcements. Many elderly people in cabled areas are purely using analogue cable (despite enticements to get digital cable) whilst Digital cable viewers are of course often using analogue cable on other TVs.

Wouldn't be to UPCs advantage for people to think Analogue cable channels are closing and do nothing till October?

I have a Saorview STB fitted in my kitchen at the moment. It is a Laurus HD digital terrestrial receiver which I bought from Tesco. I am also using a analogue cable inserted into the back of it. Although, I have no digital rooftop aerial to support the cable leading into the STB. Will this be affected by the closure of the signal after the 24th of October?

    Thanks in advance.

There is no such thing as a digital aerial. Nor Analogue cables.

If your Saorview box works, it's receiving the new signal as Saorview boxes can't tune Analogue TV at all.

Only a few people need a new aerial.

The "Analogue cable" discussed here is UPCs (ex Chorus or NTL) Hard wired Cable TV that doesn't use an aerial, the same UPC cable carries Cable Digital TV that only works with a UPC box, analogue TV generated by UPC and Broadband.

If you are using the Cable TV (UPC) company cable rather than an an aerial in the attic or on the roof, then it's just stray pickup on UPC's cable. That will continue to work or fail quite independently of anything to do with switching off Analogue channels. UPC doesn't provide any signals compatible with any Saorview box.
