Basically, as per title. I'm going to be working in Limerick for the summer and possibly transporting my Cube road bike up and down on a hitch mounted carrier. What's the situation regarding insurance if I get rear-ended? Would car insurance (full comp) cover it, or would I need to take out an additional policy? If so, what am I looking for?

Three years ago, a car rear ended me at a traffic light In Dublin. I had three bikes on a bike rack. All three were totalled.

The guy who crashed into me gave me his insurance details and all three bikes were refunded by his insurance, no questions asked. There were three bikes, three owners, and three cheques were issues to each of us, of the full price of the bike new.

To ensure that no liability can be apportioned to you, then make sure to use a trailer board so that any rearender can't say that your brake lights were obscured.

I'm not sure your own insurance would cover any loss. If you had a single vehicle accident, I'm not sure what the story would be. Obviously if someone goes into the back of you, chances are you'll get sorted from their cover.
