Samsung Kies "Connecting" problem

    I have a Galaxy S GT-I9000 and when i connect it to keys it just says connecting and nothing else.I left it for an hour and it still says connecting.I need this so i can update to Ice Cream Sandwich.How can i fix this or is there another way to update without Kies?

    Have this problem with my S2 as well sometimes. No idea why it happens, but running the troubleshooter normally works.

    same here - I find Kies awful but find that if you keep plugging out the usb and back in again in a different slot it tends to work. Also turn off bluetooth first.

    Kies is rubbish. Yes you can update without it, and much quicker. Go to www.sammobile.com, register and download the latest the most recent European firmware, for your device, when you unzip it you will find the flashing program, Odin3, is included. Read the guide how to flash - hey presto. You will not be rooting your phone. You will probably lose all the stuff stored on the internal memory (Not the internal or external sd card though)

    You will need to backup contacts and apps (you should be able to automatically do this through your google account), and optionally text messages, call logs, email account settings - their are a number of free apps that can do this.
