Hi all - Choosing a speaker/cab combination to match a particular output valve is turning out to be more difficult than i thought! I tried a bunch of them at this stage and I'm finding what sounds well with one wont with another... Any recommendations on cab matches for 6L6 and EL84 amps in particular? Thanks.

Celestions (Greenbacks, or Blues) work really well with EL 84s. EL 84s are low wattage (about 9 watt/per valve) valves and so need a sensitive speaker in front of them. Higher wattage speakers will not really work with these valves. Jensens work well too esp. AlNiCo speakers if you can afford them.

6L6s are a much higher output valve (about 25-30 watt/per valve) and so you have more choice about what can go in front of them. The typical 6L6 amp (like a Fender Twin 'verb) presents with higher-wattage-rating oxide speakers like Eminence (though I never liked these). Sometimes people put high-powered speakers with 6L6 (usually 100 W) amps. Speakers like JBL or EV. This is for an amped-up rock (Mesa) kind of sound. Somewhat counter-intuitively, 6L6s also sound awesome through Celestion Blues - rich low end and a top-end clarity and chime that you'll never get from an oxide speaker. You would think that the high-power 6L6s would blow the cones across the room. Think again, they just sound great. Detail is the hallmark of AlNiCo - so if you want that - it's where you've got to go.

My 2 amps are a Vox JMI AC 30 with Celestion Blue Bulldogs and a Marshall JMP 100W (goes to 11 type of head). I use the Marshall 100W with a pair of Vox Nightrain cabs loaded with 12" Greenbacks. The sound is phenomenal and it is my favourite sound ever. Clear and then breaks up when you play hard. With the two cabs you can arrange them live so that you can hear yourself.
I've got to say that the Vox cabs totally took me by surprise. They rival the Blues in sound quality (and the AC with the Blues sounds incredible). They're open back too, which I like because it gives a more vintage, less rawk, tone.
