a friend who'd be fairly well connected in the motor business told me that he heard that it was now illegal (since january) for drivers under 25 to drive other cars third party using their own insurance?

    anyone know anything about this?

not looking for people to slate him or the source, just confirm or deny :)

    thanks folks

I've heard nothing of the sort. If the certificate of insurance permits so then they are allowed.

I'd imagine this is more a case of one or two companies changing their T &C's for new business, I highly doubt its been made illegal, in fact, I dont think it would be possible without a whole load of changes to legislation. Either way, my insurance company hasn't notified me of any forthcoming changes to my policy.

It's actually written into Motor Insurance Directives if I recall correctly that it must be offered.... Which is a European thing. :)

Your friend is wrong, individual insurance companies can decide to offer it or not. Not many do but I know at least Liberty and Aviva still offer the extension to drive other cars for under 25's

Third party driving other people's vehicles is something that used to be standard but is now being stripped out of policies and charged extra for.

I got it as standard two months ago. Out of interest, what companies are charging extra for it?

Only by those Ryanair type insurers though. Which for the type of service they provide is a good idea. :)

ye i have it on my policy with aviva as standard. I could have got cheaper insurance but payed the extra to go with aviva for the third party on other cars.

I had a feeling that his source was wrong (he was just passing on what he heard) but didn't argue.

I haven't got anything from aviva to say its changed and it says it on the documents that I have it, good point made about that.

If you're concerned then write to your insurer asking them to confirm that you are covered. There may well be new legislation in play we don't know of... Our government aren't exactly the best at letting us know what's happening at the best of times.

It all goes down to what is written on your insurance certificate, unless the company issues you a new one with new terms then the original underwriting conditions stand and would stand up in any court of law.

When I was renewing mine last August, my renewal letter had the line saying that it was no longer offered to under 25s highlighted. I rang around and every other company said the same when I asked. Is it possible that there's people under the assumption that they still have this, but haven't actually checked?

My renewal letter was from Aviva, and I'm now with AXA, who don't allow it either.

I got my insurance in February from Aviva, third party cover as standard, as stated in my terms & conditions and my Insurance Cert.

Aviva definitely allow under 25s to drive other peoples' cars if you're fully comp. However, you only have TP cover when driving such cars.

If you think about it, making something optional doesn't mean they are charging extra for it, it just means it's optional. Getting it free and getting it standard are not the same thing.

It's optional (not standard) with FBD and RSA iirc through nononsense.ie and 123.ie respectively.

If they haven't read their schedule of insurance it's quite possible.

But what I was responding to, is where he said companies were charging extra for it, not saying it was a free option

Fair enough, if it's standard you;re still being charged though
