I recently started getting bsod and eventually got my pc to boot safely by removing all but one stick of ram in one particular ram slot.
I tested each stick in this slot and they all of the ram sticks work.
Its the sockets which appear to be the problem.
Has anyone ever heard of three sockets in a motherboard 'dying' simultaneously?
    Its a 680i sli mobo, (manufacturer BFG:eek:)

It can happen alrite, are you sure its not a build-up of dust/dirt in the socket causing it, giving it a blast with a can of compressed air would be my advice. If the socket has come dislodged ever so slightly from the board for whatever reason that could be it also

Just out of curiosity have you tested the same ram sticks in a different slot?

Its also not outside the realms of possibility that the PSU is dying, very very strange things happen when the psu is on its way out.

I presume you are using 4 sticks of RAM? Are they all different, identical, or 2 different pairs?

Did they use to all work together grand?

Thanks for the replies. I was testing different sticks in one socket. All four sticks are the same brand and same type of ram.
Some improvment now, I blasted the socoket with compressed air but it didn't do much good.
It did get me thinking about cleanliness and I tried getting a cotton bud into the sockets but it wouldn't fit.
I did clean a lot of 'gunk' off the gold contacts on the sticks themselves and now I have two sticks working. The contacts did look perfectly clean until you ran a cotton bud over them.
I had three sticks going for an hour or two but then got the bsod again so removed that one.
The problem does appear to be dirt, but the only way I can seem to get in at it is put a clean stick of ram in and remove it and clean it and put it back and continue to do this hoping it removes a little more of whatevers in the mobo socket!

The gunk on the sticks is the likely cause of the issue, the sockets could also be so clean them out thouroughly too, although me careful while doing so obviously

You should buy some isopropyl alcohol (available in any chemist for about €5)

This is extremely pure (rubbing) alcohol. Dip your cotton bud in it and it will clean much better / soak up grease / gunk, etc.

another cause of ram slot failures is a knackered chipset controller, or bad chipset control drivers
