hey all, ive provisional licence for more than a year now, but i never had a car or insurance...

    so my question is.. ?
if i pass a full licence test will my insurance will be cheaper on a car as insuring it first time or it would be same as provisional.

    thanx

All other things being equal, a full licence holder will would have cheaper insurance than a learner permit holder.

It will be cheaper if you have a full licence vs first time insuring with learners permit. But you would not have a no claims bonus so it may be higher.

How do you plan to pass the test without ever driving?

^ they may be learning in an instructors car.

When I got my first insurance I was on my provisional and they told me the premium would be less when/if I got full licence

Not sure if this is true, but I heard that insurance will sometimes go up when the person passes their full test.

The reasoning behind this being that a driver who qualified yesterday is no safer than someone who will pass thier test tomorrow, but the newly qualified driver is no longer accompanied by a parent or whoever.

I'm on a learner permit, insured as a named driver on a 1.6 Focus for well under €300, can't see it being any cheaper than that tbh.

well ive been learning with my friends car recently, and i would get few instructor classes before the test...

a bonus with full licence would be that i wouldnt have to have full licence driver beside me the whole time,

would like to be paranoid the whole time while driving around the town with provisional...

i was just wondering, does it matter if you are insuring the car first time with full licence,

i always thought it would be the same as provisional...

Seems like decent logic but its not true. €300  how are you getting that?

I think if you have gotten your provisional in the last year you have to be accompanied for your 1st two years of a full licence. I got my licence on April 1st 2011 and my instructor said if I had of been 4 days later I would have had to go through all sorts.

That 6 month thing simply means that the earliest you can sit your test is 6 months after the date of issue of your learner permit, you still have to apply for, and pass, your actual driving test.

The difference between getting insured first time as a learner permit holder and a full licence holder isn't going to be huge (generally). Some people say that their quotes at renewal go down quite a bit after they pass the test (some people even get some money back on their remaining policy life), and some people (myself included) noticed that it only resulted in a fairly small decrease at renewal time.

What's more important than full licence vs. learner permit is your age and gender in determining insurance premium.

There is not going to be a mega huge fluctuation in the cost of insurance with a provisional or a full license, as one of the main criteria is your overall driving experience, which is measured in years. So if you have a provisional license for a year, then you pass your test and you get your full license, you will have still only been driving for a year. That is not long in the grand scheme of things.

I've had the provisional for a few years(didn't drive for the first year, and then not a whole lot after I did get insured, so I ended up failing my test recently (by 1 mark:rolleyes:))

Anyway, It's with RSA who were cheapest by a good bit.

I'm the same conditions as you Kevin although the insurance is on a micra, provisional for a few years, no test done yet though. I'm a girl and in lay twenties but as a named driver my insurance was €38 for the year..... Must ask my sister who it's with as I'm on her insurance.....

My insurance from Axa will get 350 euro cheaper per year if I pass my test on Thursday.
