Suitable video editing program?

I'm looking to put all my old holiday/trip video clips together into something that at least I can look back on as a montage rather than just clicking though each one by one with no direction. I was looking at Movie edit pro mx premium software. I'd like something which can add some effects etc, which the above program…

I was looking at Movie edit pro mx premium software. I'd like something which can add some effects etc, which the above program provides.

I've never done any editing on videos before, but I use proshow gold for my photo slideshows.

Would ye recommend any other similar software for video editing? My PC is high spec so no problems running anything.
