How do I paint a pine wardrobe???

Hi, I am trying to re-vamp my daughter's bedroom furniture and am looking for advice on painting some of my handmade pine furniture. The wardrobe is 4 yrs old and was varnished with clear varnish. The drawers were made about the same time but were oil finish I think. There is also a set of varnished pine bunk beds that will need painting.
I know I'm going to have to do some sanding, but how much? Also, what paint & undercoat shall I use as I want a white satin or matt hard wearing finish.
Any advice would be great as I want it look nice and last a couple of years.
