I cerfainly think this should be discussed among the regulars and not be stifled. Im not sure where I stand on it myself but I would like to discuss it, having seen the ladt two threads on the subject closed i dont see a future for this thread and ill be thrown out for a month. Ill take my ban

I loved the OT thread. It was one of the reasons I kept coming back to Motors for a bit of bant and craic.

It was a thread where you could get advice about your car without having to keep opening new threads. It was also a great place for a newb such as myself to interact with the Motors regulars and make new friends with those regulars.

I don't think I'll be frequenting Motors quite as often as I used to now :(.

Fine by me,if it goes the way of the feedback thread with the personal comments it's gone

Once it has certain rules, there is no reason it wouldn't work.

I don't understand why it was closed tbh given the guidance that was given when it was last reopened...

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=78040935&postcount=6864

    ........

I also feel the inconsistencies between the chat having to be (or not) motors related a huge issue.

If folks argue with mods or ignore instructions by mods they should of course get the bans/infractions/warnings as appropriate, however there was an element of confusion regarding the inconsistencies as mentioned.

Rarely used the OT thread. But it was useful for small issues that could be answered in 1 post so a thread would be useless.

This - plain and simple! :)

The people posting in the OT thread are mostly the same people who keep the motors forum itself alive. Most of us, it seems, would like it back too.

My biggest issue was the innuendo filtering into other threads, it got ridiculous, the thread itself was good and I've had the craic in there. Aroubd the tim I was building the race car it was a good place to post updates

Apologies for the typos, still getting used to my new phone

Meh - I have 2,922 posts in Motors, none in the OT thread. Never even browsed it.
But then again if it works and is easily modded then why not. It seems this isn't the case.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,223 ✭✭✭Nissan doctor

The innuendo thing was done and dusted already surely?

The last few pages on the thread were fine as far as I could see, until suddenly people where getting in trouble because the OT discussion was not motoring related???

IMO, subject to certain obvious rules, there should be no limits on what can be discussed in an OT thread. Thats the whole point surely? There is no point, when certain things get mentioned, saying they should be taken to this forum or that forum when many members only frequent the motors fourm....

From what I saw just before the thread was closed, it seems to be the mods who are unsure what the thread is for, not the members.

    ............

From what I say juts before the thread waas closed, it seems to be the mods who need to clear up what the thread is for, not the memmbers.

Indeed, I was under the impression the off topic chat didn't have to be motoring related after the last time it was closed.

Are we allowed to know why it was closed in the end?

In fairness I imagine it was closed not specifically over a single incident but rather the overall way the thread was going wasn't viewed as being ok, rightly or wrongly.

I would like to see it opened again. I dont have enough car knowledge to be talking about them 24/7. I am guilty of bringing the thread into disrepute and i took my punishment and i like to think i calmed down a bit but obviously not since its still being brought up. I would hate to think that i have ruined the thread for others that were here before me so if it can be opened back up i will agree to stay off it so the regulars can have their ot thread back.

Fwiw Im not pointing fingers when talking about innuendo, it was certainly more than ond person guilty of it. Seems we've moved passed that anyway so its all good :)

Oh i understand that but i know i did go to far at times. Any other motors forum i have posted on has pretty much been anything goes once your not being abusive to somebody. I think ill just stick to them ones instead!

I would think you are not alone with that feeling :(
(not that loads of folk want to to stick to other forums but that many people will stick to other forums :) )

It took me completely by surprise when I saw it was closed. From my eyes and clearly many others it was a hasty decision. As said I posted lots in that thread because I found it a great way of talking to other members on matters not always relating to motors.

There's no harm in having somewhere to discuss last weeks football match, gaze in awe at MM's cleaning ability, catch out members of the public who attempt to clock other members cars or a place where even superstoner90 can attempt to crack a joke...

All I say is hopefully the mods take this on board ( see what I did there superstoner90) and we can get the thread up and running once more.

Imo it was back seat modding that got it closed this time, we were gently nudged back in a vaguely motorwards direction by Limerick Man ( in fairness we had been talking about the effect of immac on ones wedding tackle:p) and someone started arguing about something that really didnt need arguing about.
I for one enjoyed the OT thread as it gave me a place to interact with people i have met at the meets, and i would like to see it back.
I would also like to say, the modding on this occasion was spot on, but i think the argument could have been taken to Pm and the offender told to stfu rather than close the thread.

    My tuppence worth!

It was challengemaster I believe who said this before.... The off topic thread only became a problem when the Mods started to Mod the content.

I agree that the inuendos were lame etc but for the love of all that is holy, we've flogged that issue to death! Honestly! "flirting...... Inuendos......"

That's been done! And its been stopped!

My opinion for what its worth is that Id like the thread reopened. It was a good tool bringing the community together and helpful when advice on small queries were required.

I really do believe that its closure was harsh and the lack of explanation about its closure unfair.

I'd like to see it re-opened. It enabled us to see other posters in a non motoring manner, we got to know each other better as a result, a closer mini community. Like a social club thats now been closed :(

I will take a certain amount of flak for "arguing"? about the nature of the thread. But being an off topic thread, I didn't feel it was particularly fair for Limerick Man to use his moderating capacity (he did use the mod bold font) to try and steer the conversation. If it had been mentioned in a MODNOTE as often is in many threads on other parts of boards, what was acceptable, or what the mods expected the thread to centre around I would have happily championed LM for doing his job.

None of that was pointed toward you.
Apologies if you thought it was.
Read the last couple of pages of the Ot thread and you should see what im talking about.

For anyone that has an interest in seeing the OT thread re-opened drop the finger pointing and accusations right now.

Personally I think it's more important that those who wish to see it re-opened express why they thought the OT thread was a beneficial addition to the motors forum in the first place.

Also I hate to think that any poster should feel they should avoid motors or the OT thread (if re-opened) going forward.

This is only my crappy opinion ... but ...

I like the way the OT thread brought a bit of long overdue joviality into this forum. We were for years at each other's throats and always quick to point out errors, or argue points to death. Having the OT thread, and being allowed to have funny slightly off topicy posts in normal threads builds a lot of online comraderie and means less likelihood of people going at each other in the future.

I don't like the enforcement of seriousness, but maybe that's just me. I think it's possible to discuss cars, and have a laugh too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,400 ✭✭✭✭r3nu4l

I agree with Owen but would have the following caveat. The thread should have rules, mods should not be argued with and when people who are regulars in one thread start bringing in-jokes from that thread to other threads then the forum begins to feel cliquish and newbies can be put off be feeling that they are not part of the clique or aren't welcome. I've never seen the Motors forum like that and the regulars always help and mostly make newbies feel welcome BUT if the OT thread becomes a place where the regulars start to dominate other threads with jokes from that thread then we could have a problem.

I'd like to see people bear that in mind. As for the rest of it, my Admin opinion is simple. If the mods want to start a new thread that's cool but users must follow their guidance and shouldn't argue with them. They have our backing on that.

Couldn't thank this post enough - the OT thread even calmed Anan down even though he didn't really post in it! :D

The OT thread tended to be mostly gay jokes, innuendo and being too personal. Then again, I don't really use Motors anymore since a real life incident related to this forum.
many people will stick to other forums

Thats what I'll be doing from now on.

To be fair Confab, the incident I think you're talking about involved someone that I've never seen posting in motors before or since.

My views are stated in my previous post but these meme's are great craic and bring a bit of light spirit to this whole situation. Look what I came across on the interweb, must be a sign!

To be honest it would require some serious backpedalling if it were to start again. Which I don't see happening.
