Recommend a lock?

I've a Cube roadbike that up until now could only be found in two places: under my arse or in my house. It has never been locked to anything. Next Saturday I plan to cycle from Swords to Monaghan and then make the return journey on Sunday. I'm thinking that I might need to stop and refuel at around the 50 mile mark each day. Because of this, I'll need to lock the bike somewhere.

This bike will not be locked often and will probably never make its way to Dublin city centre, so is a d-lock really necessary? Would something lighter be enough to deter potential thieves in deepest, darkest Meath and Cavan? I'm also going to make sure the bike is covered by some form of insurance.

Would this be enough, or should I just get a d-lock and carry the extra weight when I need it (which won't be often)?

Is it going to be locked over-night where-ever you're staying in Cavan? When I'm on long solo cycles and need to lock the bike up I use a cheapo cable lock that cost about 10e but that's only for when I'm going into a shop usually in the sleepiest little village I can find and the bike's barely out of my sight.
I'd say if it's only to stop someone riding off on your bike while you're buying bananas then a simple cable lock is enough. However, if you're going to be locking it up for a few hours at a time I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything less than a decent cable lock. Having said that, small rural towns don't tend to have especially competent bike thieves.

you could leave a note asking them not to take it.

You can get a small orange kryptonite u-lock for €35. That wire thing could be snipped through in seconds with a cheap bolt cutter.
