Saw this report on BBC website and was amazed they were even trying to land in this:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17863501

So aviators of boards, cast ye're expert eyes - should they be landing in that wind ?

That looks dodgy to me although I am not a pilot or know the ins and outs of landing in those conditions. The passengers will be happy they did not divert and they landed safely although I assume the margin for error is tiny.

They look like clenched teeth and buttocks landings!

Anyone notice how the second plane flies over the camera as an airbus, then lands as an md80, and the third plane flies over as an md80 but lands as an airbus??

    Some dodgy editing there!!

There is absolutely no way that video is playing at normal speed. It's been speeded up. Even the van looks wrong. The only part playing at normal speed is the overhead shots. Why I don't know, it would have been dramatic enough anyway.

I've been to Bilbao and it's got plenty of terrain in the vicinty that would produce some interesting conditions in high wind.

The van looks normal to me ? As do the bushes blowing.

Two things to bear in mind.

    1. It's an airport road not a normal road and much lower speed limits apply.

    2. That van would have been holding short of the undershoot waiting for the plane to pass. It got moving rather quickly wouldn't you say.

Cant really tell myself. However, the strobe lights do seem to be flashing a bit fast.

    Well spotted.

For definitive proof have a look at the take off in this version.(disregard the commentary)

Depends on the runway heading and wind angle relative to the runway as to whether they should have landed or not (legally continued the approach actually). The wind looks pretty severe but if it's say 10-25 degrees (again depending on speed ) off then the crosswind component is not as bad and the wind speed limits are a little more flexible.

Fair play to the pilots in any case. In particular the go around crew. No one ever got killed from a go around!

That is sped up for sure

To answer the OP's question, the pilots of those aircraft decide at the time. They would obtain the ATIS (weather report, inc. windspeed and direction) of the airport they are arriving into and work out the crosswind components accordingly. Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft have crosswind limits of approx 35 knots (varies with model, winglets fitted or not etc etc).

The winds must have been within allowable limits for the pilots to attempt a landing, but the go around is always the best option if you are not sure you can land safely or you get blown way off the runway centreline

Cool video. I think we get plenty of fun landings in Wellington too :)

Check out the first 737 practically falling onto the runway :)

i think Bilbao is the most lethal airport for savage windshear I have ever been in and Ive seen em all. You get vicious shear from 6 miles in with the undulating terrain and mountains spewing up all types of currents. Runway doesnt help as it is humped....it greets you pretty quick too with the tendancy to flare early so you got to keep driving it in. Circle to land is a no no. If you cant get in on the frst attempt Id bugger off elsewhere.

Iberia had a fatal crash there in a 727 years ago....cfit.
