    I'm a big Apatow fan..

I genuinely think he's an excellent writer - but have stuck with him for everything from his high-points (The Larry Sanders Show, Freaks & Geeks, Undeclared, The 40 Year Old Virgin) to his low-points (Fun With Dick And Jane, You Don't Mess With The Zohan, Funny People etc).

His directorial efforts as of late do suffer with one BIG obvious flaw - runtime. His movies do seem to run a bit too long. Funny People was the one that really hit home with me - good cast, writing was sloppy but that runtime seemed like 3 hours.

And while we're at it - stop casting your wife and two kids in your movies. Once was a nice little reference, twice was pushing it but three times is ri-goddamn-diculous!

With that comes this "spin-off" / "sequel" to Knocked Up - focusing on Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann's characters and them hitting their 40's. Promising cast it must be said with Paul Rudd, Melissa McCarthy, Albert Brooks, John Lithgow, Jason Segal and Chris O Dowd among others.

The trailer didn't do much for me tbh.. and stop with that horrible FUN song.. it's awful, it's overplayed and it's nauseating. Stop it.. NOW!

Going to copy and paste what I wrote on facebook ealier regarding Apatow:

"Hes a very frustrating director. There's no doubt that he can write a great coming of age film but he seems to have difficulties editing his work. Everyone of his films is at least 30 minutes too long and the constant use of his wife and kids is irritating. She can't act and the only person on the world who wants to see his kids on screen is their grand parents who will ooh and aww over them. For the rest of us watching their scenes is enough to have one reach for a shotgun and paint the walls red."

"Funny Peole was unbearable. It was a truly deplorable piece of cinema that squandered a great performance from Sandler. I found the whole rooting for Sandler to get with his ex completely horrible as the film seemed to go out of its way to portray Bana as a genuinely nice guy. The whole way through I was rooting for Bana and hoping he'd punch Sandler, dump the wife and send the kids to boarding school."

Paul Rudd is usually very funny, I think he's the third funniest of that generation of comedians (Will Ferrel and John C. Riley being first and second respectively).

I reckon everyone should watch Wanderlust for his scene in front of the mirror :P

I actually enjoyed Funny People. If you disregard the scenes with Sandler trying to get back with his ex, then it's much better. There were quite a few scenes between Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler. But I think it's major downfall over here was the way that it was portrayed; the advertisements made it seem like it was a laugh-out-loud kind of movie, obviously trying to rake in the fanbase Sandler already has, when in fact it was a somewhat sombre affair.

Agree with this, thought Funny People was decent but marketed wrong, although it is overly long. Leslie Mann needs some career advice, if you are going to play one character for your career then make sure it is not the whingey bitch that everyone hates.

This looks throughly mediocre. For a while it seemed like Judd Apatow and the bunch of rag-tags he pulled from F&G's could do no wrong. By contrast it now seems that the list of movies of his that I really like is FAR surpassed by the rubbish hes been making since. Hes torpedoing his reputation for quality adult comedy, not least of which due to the issues already mentioned, like casting his family in everything (how fcuking pathetic. Who does he think he is? Tim Burton?)

On a side note, is anyone else thrilled for Chris O' Dowd and the headway hes been making lately? Hes gone from the IT Crowd to Hollywood and he doesnt seem to be slowing. Fantastic for him.

I wonder will Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl's characters be making an appearance in this film

It's a Judd Apatow film, occasionally for better and very often for worse. It's indulgent to a fault, full of oddly distracting cameos and Apatow's friends / relatives. Maude Apatow and Charlene Yi are infuriating. Many of the film's finest comedians are underutilsed. Some subplots crash and burn.

But there's a few laughs (not as many as you'd hope though), and buried under the unwieldy running time there are brief glimpses of insight about married life, economic pressure and the general trials and tribulations of the middle class. First world problems, but mildly engaging ones.

In conclusion: a bit better than Funny People.

Empire's review, stated no, Seth's character appears in a game of "Words with Friends" on his ipad.

Jason Segal is in it though, same character from Knocked Up.

Both this and Funny People could have been pretty good movies if they cut about 30 or 40 minutes off them. I think Funny People was a bit better overall, if only they hadn't tacked on the last half an hour where he tries to win Leslie Mann over. There's just not enough meat in Apatow's films to justify the running time.

^That, Apatow's film's biggest weaknesses are their ridiculous running times, 2.5hrs is far too long for a comedy. the extended cut of the 40 Year Old Virgin is ridiculous, he doesn't even meet Catherine Keener's character for well over an hour and fifteen into it, thats usually when most romcoms are starting to wrap things up.

Went to see this last night; its alright. There are a few funny laughs but there is only so much you can take of a movie, which is mostly about people bickering and especially when the acting is quite weak.

EDIT: It bugged the crap out of me that, with the financial difficulties they were having, they were still able to drive around in a 5 series BMW and stay in a 5 star hotel.

Hoping to go see this. Looks ok.

One question. Why did it take so long to release if there was an official trailer released in April 2012?

Trailer's are getting released earlier and earlier..

.. we're now in an age where they release big booming promos for teaser trailers!

    So.. that's a teaser for a teaser..

Really enjoyed this. Thought it was consistently funny, engaging, it had likable characters, and, although there was minimal narrative beyond the ups and downs of a marriage in mid-life, I was never bored or anything other than entertained.

It's been described as "dark", but this is true only in parts, and the darkness is always relieved by a joke, wisecrack, something real from the kids. And it really did say something about what it's like to turn 40, the anxieties, fears, panic, what keeps you going. I don't think I'm in the majority with this opinion, but I think it's Apatow's best film.

I enjoyed this.what annoyed me was that the trailer has clips that are not in the movie

If this'd been an hour shorter, it woulda been a good film. If it'd been minus Paul Rudd, it would've outright sucked.

It was okay, tbh it's just fluff, I saw it not long after Christmas and I can't really remember most of it. Very different from Knocked Up tonelly, it really is its own stand alone movie, they have pretty much nothing in common apart from the characters they share. Knocked up is by far the superior film.

One thing I do remember is how annoying I found a lot of the characters, Paul Rudd and Leslie Manns especially, they were just irritating. John Lithgow however was a nice surprise, but he is awesome in everything.
