Anyone know if it's possible to have a dedicated nvidia G540m graphics card and Intel graphics card working together playing a game? The laptop I have uses Optimus and is the Samsung rf 711. Is there anything I can do in the BIOS? I don't think is possible but I need to ask here.

No, they can only operate one at a time.

If you need more performance you can try overclocking, though I don't know how well that card overclocks.

Why do you want the two together working? You can select what graphics card a game uses from the nvidia control panel if that's what you really need.

A friend of mine has a game "Armour 2" I think its called but he is giving it to me on loan but reckons my nvidia card wont be powerful enough to play it. The laptop can be overclocked to 3.1ghz on an i7 processor. I have 8GB of RAM. If there was a way of getting both cards working together it might be enough to play but the Intel graphics card isnt great anyway. There would have to be 2 of the same nvidia sli cards in order for them to work together am I right? Just an afterthought.

To be honest, even if it were possible (and it's not) I would say that it would significantly degrade performance rather than enhance it. SLI is a different story.

You are right,I agree especially when they are two different cards. One ok card and one terrible card. The CPU would be sending information/data to two different graphics cards at the same time, slowing it down totally.

I was only checking to see if it was at all possible. Would it be possible for me to change the nvidia graphics card? Shouldnt be a problem should it?

Did external graphics cards ever take off?

Can you buy them online? Do they need a compatible motherboard or is the USB connection sufficient? What about cooling etc?

To be honest they'd be difficult to find and they're pretty much useless. They might boost performance if you only had the intel integrated card, but they wont offer improved performance over your 540m card

Is something like this even useless?

I dont have experience but from reading around yes I think it is. They're old enough technology to be honest.

MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision might boost the performance somewhat.

    Note: overclock at your peril.
