We have a 2003 volvo s60, the engine management light comes on intermittently but garage have said nothings wrong with car.

Twice now i've had a reduced engine performance message and loss of power. The garage is now saying its the throttle body:confused::confused: and as volvo extended the warranty to 10yrs i should take it to main dealer, anybody know anything about this as it seems a bit odd to have a warranty on a 9yr old car part.

I phoned volvo to ask but the service dept was busy and am now waiting for a callback but have been told this will probably be monday now.

Info on the Electronic Throttle Module (ETM) problem:

    http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/etm.shtml

As Volvo's reputation is founded on safety, Volvo never hesitates to launch world wide safety recall campaigns when they are required. However, Volvo does not believe that ETM malfunction is a safety-related issue and this view is shared by the authorities in the UK.

Volvo is actively working with its dealers to resolve customer cases involving ETM issues. For the models potentially affected, a free of charge software upgrade and ETM clean has been progressively rolled out and Volvo has offered this solution to nearly 2,000 customers to date.

Regrettably some vehicles require a new ETM and, in these situations, Volvo makes a contribution towards the cost depending on a vehicle's age and mileage. Volvo dealers are aware of the campaign and have recently been reminded of the process in place for customers.

Thanks Westwing, just seems a bit much expecting Volvo to replace/repair a 9yr old part.

Didnt you have an S40 that had all sorts of engine issues after some garage work. Did you swap that for the S60?

Yes we still have the s40, this s60 is our second car also have a van and a peugeot as well (well peugeot the sons). seriously considering moving away from Volvos completly at this stage  The s40 has been nothing but trouble since we got it back from the garage, the s60 hasn't cost us to much even though its a few years older.

    .

Which garage told you its 10 year warranty? As far as Im aware its not relevant over here and was a Volvo Uk sponsored warranty and was only for the older throttle body which was changed in late 2001 ie the Magnetti Marelli one.

The link Westwing posted doesnt apply to Ireland as they are different markets and Uk rules dont apply over here. The amount of people that quote that 10 year warranty to me after reading it on a UK forum is ridiculous.

I personally wouldnt expect any manufacturer to replace a part after 9 years no matter how well known the problem is.Also if it is a MM one and this is the first time your replacing it then youve done very very well @ 9 years.

What make of throttle body is in it?

If its the Magnetti Marelli one you`ll have to replace. If its the bosch one (which I think it is as it replaced the Magnetti Marelli in late 2001) its probably not your problem as I dont think Ive ever seen the bosch ones fail in all my years in Volvo.A good cleaning on the bosch ones usually sorts them out.

You really need to get it on a Volvo diagnostic machine to be honest as some code readers dont read the Volvos 100% accurately.

Its the local one although its a Renault dealer he does Volvos as well.

Nor me which is why i thought it was strange. I think sometimes people expect the earth lol

No idea garage still have my car so i'll ask them.

Thanks I've phoned Smiths this morning after i missed their callback last night and they're shut today but i'll try and take it in next week, am just nervous driving it that far in case the reduced performance msg starts and it almost chokes itself again(which is what it sounds like)

But is the Renault dealer an actual Volvo dealer??If not then he doesnt know what hes on about.

Why not give it a clean yourself. Its a 15 minute job.

The throttle body comes off quite handy and a few sprays with a decent carb cleaner will remove all the crap off the sensor and will more than likely solve your problem.

No thats why i've phoned smiths of drogheda to hopefully get it sorted properly next week as the nearest dealer is over an hour away, and when it broke down the other day i called the only other garage i know that does volvos. A couple of local garages won't touch them and the only other one is the one i had issues with before.

 Am a typical girl and can only just put the oil in and change my wiper blades :o:o But i will say it to hubby and if we can get some he might give it a go. The garage made out its a harder job than that so i thought it was a volvo dealer job.

Its a harder job to change since it needs programming but cleaning it is fairly straight forawrd.

Actually--I think you might be able to clean it in place if you just take the large pipe off.

I am having the same problem. I replaced throttle body with a second hand one and still have same prob. The Volvo garage is talking about putting a 'damper' on the throttle body . I am doubtful this will work. Could it be anything else?
    Thanks
