"..her soulful, cigarette-scratched voice and melancholy lyrics recall Fiona Apple and PJ Harvey." Rolling Stone

“An album about love, especially an album about the addiction of love, can easily slip into cheesy territory. With Chesapeake, however, Yamagata’s honesty proves intoxicating and her joyfulness is addictive”- Blogcritics.org

“Elephant's songs of love and death are heart-wrenchingly sad, movingly performed and sung in a poignant, luminous voice betwixt pop and country folk-country” - Mojo

Whelanslive are delighted to announce that internationally renowned US singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata will be paying a visit to Whelan’s on Thursday May 3rd. Praised by critics for her intimately confessional songwriting and arrangements, Rachael released her third album, Chesapeake in October 2011 on her own Frankensfish label , the follow up to her critically acclaimed 2008 release, Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart tracks from which appeared various movies & TV shows including Greys Anatomy, Private Practice, Brothers and Sisters and more. Emboldened & reinvigorated by her new sense of independence & control Rachael spoke candidly about her latest opus:
“Midway through recording the album, we had a listening party bbq tonight where one person said to me that the songs sound like I’m in control of my own life now and I think she is right. Chesapeake has been made with a lot of love in the room (and tequila) and like the Frankenfish that can swim and walk on land is surprising the hell outta me.”

Yamagata has appeared numerous times as a guest vocalist for other artists including: Jason Mraz's Did You Get My Message?, Fireflies and The Believer by Rhett Miller, on Toots & the Maytals's True Love, the song Barfly by Ray Lamontagne, and several songs on Ryan Adams' Cold Roses album. She also contributed vocals to six tracks on the Bright Eyes album Cassadaga. In addition to this already deeply impressive CV, Rachael can also claim among her accomplishments to date an appearance in 30 Rock and a track on The Muppets ‘Green Album’.

Her songs have appeared on several TV shows, including The L Word, Charmed, How I Met Your Mother, ER , Nip/Tuck, Men in Trees, Alias, One Tree Hill, Los Serrano, Brothers & Sisters, Grey's Anatomy and The O.C, on which she made a guest performance.
