Friend has 4k to put towards a new car

He said he only wants an Audi A6 ( at least 05 or newer for which he was going to try and get a loan for) and I said he's not open to enough potential cars out there that you can get for the 4k he has. He wants a diesel engine, and he currently drives a 01 1.9 diesel Passat.

So what cars do you think might sway him?

Honestly, i've dealt with a few friends like that and there's nothing you can do. He's f*cked, any input from you will only make you liable. He probably has a particular colour in mind too? :)

Best of luck to him going from a 01 Passat diesel to a 05 A6 diesel for €4k.

I think the 2.0TDI in the A6/Passat platform is meant to be the troublesome engine. I'd avoid but as said good luck to him getting one for €4k with a 11 year old Passat diesel.

11 year old Passat diesel is probably the most saleable car currently on the market and will make decent money.

    Think we all misread.

What you're saying is, he has 4k cash, but is considering getting a loan to bring that money up to a larger amount.

Fair enough, the younger lads seem to love them. In a private sale probably get around €2.5k for it being generous.

    €6.5k for a 2005 A6 TDI? Not a chance.

+1, and the OP thinks that the friend would be better served buying something for the €4k that they have.

Yup! Well I think he should at least look at his options rather than taking out a loan for a car.

Ah fair enough, disregard my previous post so! They seem to be going from around €7.5k-€9k on donedeal but he might want to buy from a dealer.

Personally, I couldn't agree more. Remember, though, that people buy cars for all sorts of reasons - the price/ability ratio mightn't be as important to him as it is to you.

True that. But when I said I'd post it on boards he was curious to what suggestions had been given, but I told him I hadn't gotten around to it yet. That was yesterday, hopefully get some suggestions to take to him, see what he makes of it!
