Why do office phones systems cost so much?

Seriously. I run a small 2 person office and am looking to get 2 phones installed. The best quotes I can get are for approx €800 & VAT (including installation) with eircom/UPC costs separate.

I understand there is a degree of complexity with routers & switches that will automatically make them more expensive than home phones, but a multiple of 10-15?

I see there are plenty of second hand office phones on DoneDeal & eBay but, perhaps unsurprisingly, any companies we have contacted have strongly recommended against going that route.

    Any advice?

why not get a mobile phone with unlimited landline calls, or use a voip service?

I wont go into detail (there's a post in here from some months ago all about it) but the mobile phone option wont work due to reception issues.

Hadnt thought of the VOIP option mind you. Do you know if Skype is the way to go or are there better providers?

I dont know the cost of an office phone, but I do know that you won't get a decent(wireless) home phone for less than €50. With anything, decent quality office stuff costs a lot more, so I imagine a good phone would be at least €150, probably more.

Add in a switch(probably a few hundred), and labour which will be a few hundred, and you're looking at close to €800. Very expensive none the less.

The basic setup for 2 independent phones / 2 numbers / no broadband would be 1 ISDN basic rate adapter to two phones connected to it.

You only need the phone system (which can be added later) if you looking for a voicemail / conferencing / or you must be able to pick up incoming calls on either phone. Are you planning for growth in numbers?

Or there are VoIP phones which rely on sending the voice calls through your internet connection. Depending on the internet connection available to you, it might be worth trialling through a laptop. Then if that works, picking up handsets and subscribing to a VoIP service to get callable numbers.
