Mac Wireless

    Hi guys

I hope I have this in the right section. I'm looking for a bit of advice, here's the problem.

Last year I got Vodafone at home broadband and had no problems connecting devices to it - phones, Wii etc. Then in September I bought a new iMac.

The modem and phone are connected to the one socket - but not through a splitter in the one socket IYKWIM. Sorry for the lack of technical description. They are both in the hall inside the front door, I think the socket was put in when the house was built around 7 years ago.
So at the moment the Mac is in the kitchen and connects via wireless, so it's not plugged into anything directly.

Ok so the problem is that while I'm using the Mac online, the connection will drop. However the connection is fine on my phone and other devices and they can all still browse the internet.
So naturally I figure it's a problem with the computer itself. Cue a load of calls to Apple and various troubleshooting. After a while they insist there is no fault on the Mac.
To test it, I brought it to my Dad's where he also has a vodafone modem, connected to his wireless and left it there for a day. It didn't drop at all.

So now I think it's the modem. After a lot of troubleshooting from Vodafone, they sent a new modem but the problem is exactly the same.

What I don't understand is why it only drops the mac, and not the iphone, an ipad or the Wii etc. All I do when it drops is do another scan on the mac for the wireless, it reconnects and off we go. I don't ever have to reboot anything.

Also, the new modem disconnects itself from the wireless every day at exactly the same time - just before 6am. When I say disconnects, the middle light on it flashes which means that the internet signal is gone. I have to reboot the modem every day.

I'm at a loss as to what I should do next. The mac worked perfectly at my dads, and yet when it drops in my house none of the other devices do.

Should I try a differerent modem from another manufacturer? It's driving me mad.

    Any help would be appreciated!

It my be the DHCP server refreshing the Mac's address, you could try configure a static ip on your mac.

So I dont like mac's personnaly so all I can provide is a link to a guide to try:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/22161/how-to-set-up-a-static-ip-in-mac-os-x/

For your IP I would suggest .15 or something (thats my favourite for no reason) so depending on the modem address (see below) it will be something like 192.168.0.15 etc...

The subnet mask should be fine at 255.255.255.0

Modems are normally either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 just good your model number to find out or enter both of those into a browser and see which brings up the modem login or admin page.

I also suggest using the google DNS server that the provide which is 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4

    Hi Fionny

thanks for your reply and for the link :)

We did that during one of the Apple support calls, but it made no difference unfortunately.

Ok, that doesn't look familiar so I don't think I've tried that - I will give it a go when I get home and see how it goes!
    Thanks a million Fionny

to be honest if it was the modem all wireless devices would drop the connection also the fact you have other apple products(over-priced cr@p:pac::pac:) connected and working fine would indicate the modem has no problem with apple and the protocols they use.

Perhaps try changing the wireless channels and see if you can get a stable connection on one of them?Try the odd ones from 1 to 11

I think some Macs have had issues with wifi lately, if your still having issues best off posting this in the Mac forum. also try changing the wireless channels as suggested above. Closed.
