Cannot record properly on TV Star Saorview box?!

TV Star T1010 HD USB PVR

Just bought the set top box from an electrical reseller in Cork who's currently having a sale on these setbox boxes. Half price at €45. Was told in store it could record onto USB. Also play back from USB.

Got home, set it up... after one or two minor hiccups when it was trying to scan for Lithuanian channels by default. Not 'Soarview Approved' as such despite the ad on the front of the shop giving that impression.

Lovely picture quality on CRT set, but whenever trying to record to USB the picture seems to automatically start macroblocking/distorting. Happens on all channels. Stops the moment I stop the recording.

Took the shops suggestion of reformatting USB stick. Problem remains.

Is that meant to happen on other proper approved boxes, like some kind anti-piracy measure?

Or maybe it's unique to my new TV Star STB?

    Any ideas folks?

What kind of USB stick are you using? The read/write speed might not be fast enough.

I am recording with a plain enough 4 GB memory stick. Formatted to FAT 32 with both by my PC and using the STB.

When I get home I will trying using the mini SD card (with USB adapter) that I normally use with dSLR camera. That has a fast read/write rate.

There is a thread here about it, i went to buy one the other day and they weren't happy I was questionning the approved bit and fed me awful rubbish. Unfortunately I am glad but also sad it isn't working out as expected, glad I didn't buy one now.

Are you sure your signal is ok?

My signal can be a bit iffy at times, all seems to kind of depend on the weather. Might need to get a new ariel. Still a strong correlation between the record command and a perfectly good signal going south.

I suspect it's the poor signal. I saw the same thing on a different box (a Xoro) when I was setting up my Saorview. Prior to connecting to a properly aligned aerial, I was getting reception at low signal quality level (note ..it looked perfect) and everytime I started a recording I experienced picture breakup like you described. Perhaps internal inteference or perhaps the cpu was being pushed too heavily what with all the error correction it was doing.

After fixing the aerial I did not experience the problem since even with the same USB stick.
