Would poor first year results have a significant impact on your overall degree (BA) result?

I am going back to NUIG to repeat 2nd year of my BA in September as I didn't pass it a couple of years back and left college subsequently. I am just slightly worried about my overall degree as my first year results were quite poor!

I'm pretty sure your result is a combination of your last two years of a degree or your last years results if they give you a higher mark. How you did in first year shouldn't affect it. :)

When I did my undergrad a few years back (2006-2010) the overall result was:

    - Final year (80%)
    - Third year (15%)
    - Second year (5%)

It might have changed now and I failed an exam at Christmas in 3rd year which went against my overall score in final year. I worked my ass off and it paid off in the end!

Anyways Boofle if you work hard you'll do well! The very best of luck!

First year results don't really matter as long as you pass for Arts or Law degrees.
Your overall degree is your final year results, unless the average of your second and final year would be higher. If this is the case, your average would be used.

    Dunno about other subjects though.

    In B. Comm it was 2nd year 50% and 3rd year 50%.

In fairness, I think a good way of helping students in situations like these would be if students passed all of these exams, to write off the lowest result of each year. Some people are just not good at some subjects, like myself and statistics. If this was done, it wouldn't punish people for not being naturally good at a topic versus being suited to 90% of the course.
