I know the R&A aren't going to change due to one thread on boards but I think golf would be fairer were the hole say 6" in diameter instead of 4.25".
Not that I'm a bad putter or anything but I feel the long game would be more rewarded.
Nothing more annoying than missing a short birdie while your competitor who has chunked their approach then chips & putts for par.
For a game wher a hole averages 400 yards far too much is concentrated in those final 20.

    What say you ?

You make it 6 then there'll still be some missing by inches :D You have to draw the line somewhere

Whats wrong with chunking your approach and then paring out, shows you have a good short game, do you always hit your greens in reg?

They tried that as an experiment in America back in the 40s or something for a couple of tournaments. Turned out the good putters & short gamers won by even more shots.

They should also shorten all holes to <150 yards to help people that are as erratic as I am off the tee.

    It's a disgrace I tell you.

Sounds like someone has the yips. ;)

Ben Hogan made this argument when his putting deserted him. If they didn't listen to him.......

I think the scenario of a great approach and missing a short putt while your opponent gets up and down is one of the greatest aspects of the game of golf. I say no change. No way.

Exactly. The harder it is to get up and down, the more important a good long game becomes. Making the hole bigger would make it easier to get up and down.

The hole is the same size for everyone.

played out in new forest a couple of years ago, and on the practice green they had holes that were half the size of normal holes.....i too 10 minutes of practice putting before going out on these...made the holes look much bigger on the real course, but my card got wrecked on that devious 4th hole.....

    few beers last night Rabidlamb??

Is the 4th in New Forest the Par 4 index 1 where the green is the far side of the drain?

I’m nearly sure I read somewhere (Pelz, Rotella) that an experiment was tried out in the US with large diameter holes in Hogan’s day. It was an attempt to put more emphasises on the long game. However it was quickly abandoned went the chaps that where good at the short game and putting won even more easily.

yes....i drove it into the bunker on the right and tried to take it on, came up short, got wet, dropped back, stuck into bunker about 4 yards past pin, no shot out of there....eight strokes, bye bye stroke, intermediate scratch cup

Tough hole if you go for it in 2. Green very narrow front to back.
I managed a par on that hole there last time I played there (and i have 2 shots on it :o) drove short by mistake so laid up second shot just this side of the drain. Got my up and down and walked to the 5th very happy!!! (managed to hit the 5th green in 2 and 3 putted as well:mad: only me second time to do that on a par 5!)
