Help With Intermittent Tap!!

This is driving me mad now...

Have a 02 Modeo 1.8 Lx Petrol. Brought the car in today, asked for a full service and to investigate the intermittent tapping sound (beginning to wonder if it's all in my head)

Was told that they fixed the intermittent (such lovely problems are those intermittent ones!!) engine hunting and intermittent tap/rattle.
Drove the car out of the garage and low and behold... both were still there. Kinda Feel like I got jipped

I can't for the life of me seem to be able to capture the sound on video but I gave it my best shot and this is what I've got:

Most noticeable in the first couple of seconds

and this: (have to turn volume up pretty loud for this one. I can hear it very loudly while sitting in car but didn't come out too well on this vid. The reason I took it from the drivers seat is because every time I stop the engine to open the bonnet the tap/rattle isn't there anymore! Very hard to time it properly to capture it.

It's really doing my head in now.

    Anyone got any ideas?

It may be one of the pulleys on the serpentine belt.
Its a known fault on the diesel mondeos - it was on mine for some time before I traded it in.

    Swirl flaps....

And possibly the vacuum leak of some sort causing the hunting.

    Is it an easy fix?

If it is swirl flaps the the proper repair is a new manifold. You could go for a second hand one but many could have the same problem, the manifold from later models(04ish on I think) didn't have the problem and can be fitted with minor modification.

The other option is to remove the swirl flaps and blank the holes, although, unlike BMW's, the mondeo's idle can be a little off if you do this.

How much would a new manifold cost?

Something tells me it won't be cheap...

Is it something that needs to be checked straight away?
I've definitely heard the same sound coming from 03 Mondeos too.

Also, what would be the course of action for the hunting? It generally only last 10-15 seconds and then stops. Usually after starting the engine.

It may last for a long time like that, it may not, its impossible to say. But if swirl flaps break they get injected into the engine, causing major damage.

Don't panic until you get the car properly diagnosed first though.
