They are quite heavy on diesel and slow.

    Forget the 2.5.
The 3.2 is more powerful and lighter on fuel.

Go automatic if possible, gf's dad had a 3.2 (bought new) that was never driven hard or went off road (guy really minds his stuff) which needed a flywheel after a few years.

Lovely to drive, great presence on the road, but manual gearboxes have a serious flaw with the output shafts - almost impossible to get a good used box for one and getting the box rebuilt is pricey. They also use a fair drop of diesel as said earlier. Brakes can give bother too causing a lot of heat build up which toasts the wheel bearings if not caught early and again is a pricey fix. I'd agree with Colm on the auto route -lad in the tool hire business I know has one with 270k on the clock(a 05) and he loves it. Thirsty though.

i have a 05 swb manual, its a good jeep but like the others say it is thirsty and a tad under powered. If i was to do it again i would go for the 3.2. Watch out for the 4x4 system, the switches in the transfer box give problems as do the actuator. If the oil isn't changed every year the actuator shaft corrodes. Give it a good long test drive as the switches seem to reset on power off but fail after a while, you will get a amber flashing light on the center diff of the 4x4 warning system. Timing belts are due at 90000km's so factor that into the price.

The 2.5 is a very old engine, the 3.2 is much better.

I have a 3.2 auto lwb 05, 300km's now, not an ounce of trouble yet great yoke, on the diesel part i'm now averaging 9.5l per 100km's not to bad for mixed driving in something this size. Can be alot worse depending on what your towing or how much stop start you do obviously, the 2.5 will be worse than this though. and going to a different brand won't brand won't change the diesel consumption for a similar vehicle.

as said the 3.2 would be better, and go for the auto if you can.

I think the sensors go in the transfer box from under use, not sure though, mine gets used often enough, low range and lock about 1-2 a month, the ones with issues my be pure road cars (not sure just my opinion)

But get a nice clean one, There are great value now compared to land cruisers which go for near double money to the equivalent Pajero and they are not twice as good, but that topic is for a different thread.
