Sticking on number plates

I'm wondering what's the best way to stick on a number plate on a car (without screws). I've been told that silicone would do the trick. Anyone out there used this, and did it hold the plate securely?

I heard you can use self-adhesive pads, also Velcro, but would the silicone do on its own?

Also, could the silicone be removed at a later stage without damaging the paintwork?

    Any advice appreciated.

It's not unheard of for people to mount lips and spoilers using 3M double sided tape and the likes, so for a number plate I would imagine it would be fine.

That's worth considering - you probably have to buy it in a roll, is it expensive?
Would you get 3M in auto shops or hardware?
    Thanks.

Silicone is ick stuff, you'll regret it if you ever need to take them off later, it leaves a terrible mess. (The person that had the wife's car before her used it to attach a piece of interior trim, because they were too lazy to pull the clips out of the bodywork. Langer here had to tidy it up.)

I have my plates on with double-sided adhesive pads, which you can buy in Halfords for silly money, but I'm sure some of the DIY shops will have rolls or pads of it much cheaper. Makes for a nice tidy look on the car, no ugly screw caps to discolour and fall apart over time.

Eireplates have adhesive pads specifically for attaching reg plates

Halfords have a roll of Harris numberplate tape that holds them on no problem.

I can also vouch for the Eireplates ones.

    Aireplates as advised above.

But get a set of these from them
    Simple Fix Plate holders

They screw to the manufacturers holes in bumpers/boot and then pet adhesive strip to them, Attach number plate.. 100% perfectly alligned plates. with no screws showing.
Nothing annoys me more that number plates being all over the place on a car.
