Buying car and tax question

    lm buying a car on Saturday from a garage, the tax is out since Feb, my question is if the car is signed over to me on Sat a friend said l will have to pay the back tax from the start of the month, would it be better to take it on May 1 ?

    Yes better to collect 1st May, otherwise you have to pay the tax for this month.

    Collect it over weekend and keep at your driveway until 1st May.
    Ask dealer to put 1st May as date of sale and you'll be good.

    This is the whole go to the guards and say the car has been off the road for years because the previous owner didnt believe in car tax hype? :P

    Dont get stung yourself, park it up until the first of May!

    Nope, ghogie, doesn't really matter about the previous tax history, only whether it's taxed for the month that you are buying it or not.

    You are best to sign it over May 1st. Whether you wait, or get the seller to forward date the VLC depends on the seller I suppose.
    Some sellers won't have a problem with this, but don't assume they'll be ok with it. I've had a seller try to explain to me that he would somehow be liable if I crashed the car, that I had already paid him for, in the few intervening hours between 1 day and the next.
