Just following on from the renaming of the ring road around Cork, does anyone else think it's nonsensical that the N25 doesn't change route number after Waterford?

The practice around the country seems to be that route numbers change at major destinations (N25-N22 in Cork, N24-N18 and N7-N20 in Limerick, N18-N17 in Galway and N4-N15 in Sligo).

It would seem to make sense then to renumber the eastern section of the N25. One of the main reasons for this in my view is that signage seems to prefer the end destination of a road, so you've the ridiculous situation where when you're leaving Cork, there's a sign for Rosslare (pop. 1,100) but none for Waterford (pop. 50,000).

There are even signs such as where the R676 meets the N25 at Lemybrien (look at it on Google Maps) where the indications are just "Rosslare" and "Cork". I suspect people on that road are more likely to be looking for Waterford than looking for Rosslare.

    Thoughts?

Rosslare is a major port - the most direct route to London for anyone coming from Cork and Limerick. The village size is quite irrelevant. How many people live in Holyhead for instance?

As for N25, i think its fine the way it is. All signs from Cork City do mention Waterford on the N25 anyway

Best solution would be to extend the N11 to Rosslare and stop the N25 at Wexford Town.

I'm really not sure what the benefit of having a route change like this would be. Having had a quick look at Google Maps in a few locations along the N25 it seems to me that practically all the major signs indicate Rosslare and Waterford on the N25 westbound so its fairly clear what destinations are on the route. Once you go beyond Waterford it looks like most signs indicate Rosslare and Wexford so again fairly clear.

While I admit that some of the minor roads joining will only have Rosslare as the end destination on advance signage most will also have Waterford signed when you actually reach the N25 junction. This happens on the R676 at the junction with the N25. To be honest as somebody from that region I don't think anybody heading on the R676 would ever have taken that road looking for Waterford. The R676 starts in Carrick-on-Suir and there would be no signage to indicate either Waterford or Rosslare at the beginning of this destination (its signed for Dungarvan) so its highly unlikely that somebody looking for either destination would take this road in the first place.
