    I have a very similar Ship's light to the one on the left hand side but mine is electric with the red light for Starboard(i think).

    Red is for Port (left), Green for Starboard (right). Aircraft use the same system which is to allow other vessels tell your direction of travel in poor light based on the configuration of the lights e.g. if you're traveling in a boat along a river in poor light and you can make out a boat showing red to the left and green to the right, she's going in the same direction as you.
