I might be getting a new car over the weekend. The tax is out since last year. Do I have to wait for the book to come back to tax it or can I walk in to my local office tuesday and tax it??

If the guy who is selling you the car , gives you the book, then you can go to the tax office and tax it there and then, he may need:D to accompany you as he is not supposed to give you the book but post it to the office.

Why don't you leave it until next Tue. May 1st? Save you one month's tax. You have to tax it from the 1st of the month during which you become the owner so do nothing until April is finished.

Forgot this myself and taxed my car on the 30th of March in my eagerness to have everything correct

If he buys a car over the weekend (it's still in April) then he is liable for tax for whole April, and only way to avoid paying it, is to declare car off the road for April.
To make it all work together (buy a car in April and declare it was off the road in April) OP would have to tow a car after purchase, or only pick it up in May, to make sure he's 100% legal.

You coulod always ask the seller to date the VRC on the 1st of May and post it then ;)

Once it's recorded by shannon as being transferred to you, then you can tax it, you don't need to wait for the log book

To be honest if I was the seller there would be no chance I agreed to forward-date the logbook by few days, as then for those few days car would be still registered in my name, and I would be responsible for anything which was done by the car (speeding tickets, parking fines, bank robberies, etc.).
I doubt many sellers would go for it.

It could be as simple as you keep the car, the buyer collects on the 1st and you send VRC then.

I would be happy enough with that situation :)

    Oh yes, that's allrite.
But will many buyers leave their money and collect the car only few days later?:D

    Hmmmmmm

I've had it before but this is Ireland and people do strange things for no reason

Just declare it off the road for the few days. Easy peasy

    http://www.motortax.ie

You can check within vehicle transaction query subsite.
But remember that even if it's recoreded by Shannon say 3rd of May, but you bought a vehicle on 29th of April, you are still liable for tax for April.

Unless I declare it off the road yes? So if I buy the car tomorrow and its in my name from then but I dont collect it till tuesday I can get it declared off the road and tax it from may??

The tax on it is out since 11/11

Why do you think towing a car on the road would not require it to be taxed?

What I means was towing on a car transporter trailer or on a towing truck.
In that case I think motortax is not required.

    Yes, that's right.
What I meant by "being liable for motortax for April" was that you can either pay it or declare of the road.
PS - remember as well, that no one is really checking if your declaration was true or false, so if you are not caught by any gards on the way, not recorded by any anpr camera,etc... even if you take car home straight away tomorrow, and delcare it was off the road for April, no one will most likely find out.
I know I'm advising braking the law here, but government is braking basic human rights here by requiring to pay full months tax just for one day use.

I nearly burst myself laughing over that one; Mayo is not so far away as to have such a comprehensive set of human rights as proportional motor tax is it?

    :D:D:D:D
My comparison to human rights was rather a metaphor.

    EDIT:
But now thanks to your link I found it:
    Article 5.

No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Requiring whole months tax just for one day use is nothing else than cruel, inhuman treatment :p:D

It wouldn't go through that fast. Ring the tax office today giving the reg and see if it has changed over on the computer, if it has then you can go in and tax it
