Arent they looking enough for these? would it be just as cheap to buy a semi decent one? Is there money to be saved by getting a 'doer upper' for a grand or are they a bottomless pit money & repairs ?

people use quads to strap the deer too after they shoot them. they dont drive around shooting from the quad its just a means of transporting the dead deer.

Have had a few quads, they can be more trouble then there worth. You have to spend well to buy a good reliable one and you'd either need to buy it newish enough or know the quad very well.
Plus you need to think about noise levels when travelling to your permissions and also maybe need a trailer to tow it there.

I have an old 2wd Honda "Big Red" that I bought about 17 years ago for 750 punts!!!.Already it was 4th hand and had been abused to Fcuk by a semi state body who wasnt too fussy how the tax payers money was spent on not looking after equipment.

It is a total dog in looks, batterd plastic, both carrier frames are bent or rusted out, welded up and re broken, rotten exhaust box[I cant find another for that model]dodgy brakes, and coverd in mud most of the time:eek:,as it is the work horse around here.

Apart from an annual oil change and putting petrol in it,and a new battery, and a new set of tyres about four years ago, this thing starts on the button and goes like a champ!!:D One of the easiest engines to work on too.Required tools ,hammer, screwdriver, bigger hammer, duct tape and a rock!! My local bike mechanic is amazed that it is still going. He has said he has seen younger 4wd quads dead and buried in the time I have this machine.

Yes,2wd is a PITA f you run into a major mucky bit with a 1/4 ton trailer of wood on it and you bog down.So the smart thing is [1] put a cheapo winch on the front or [2] dont drive into mucky spots that you know are there and think you can handle.

Would I buy one just for hunting??Not really, they are still IMHO mad money for what they are here[Some ads are looking for more than what a good 2nd hand 4wd jeep would cost you!!]And having it tied up in a piece of machinery that you can only use a few months of the year seems a bit mad ,to me anyway. Its a work horse first, leisure tool second.

Transport can be a pain alright.Needs a trailer,or PU,or some secure storage out on your let.Lots of Pros ,lots of cons to them.:)

Where is that written on a deer licence? Its against the law to shoot from a vehicle.

They are used to get from A to B and to transport what you shoot. Deer dont seem to be bothered by quads either because they are used to the farmers one and dont get spooked.

Don't get me wrong I can see the need for it, Just didn't think it was allowed

Its the same thing as driving your 4x4 into the field to pick up the carcase. just the quads can for further in rougher areas and not damage the ground as much in wet conditions.

They just take the drag out of the stalk. Fallow can be a long enough drag, wouldn't fancy it with a big sikka or red.

Front page under Conditions and to quote Condition No. 2 " The licence is only valid for hunting deer on foot with firearms"

Again not trying to bust your chops, but could you not get in trouble if a ranger saw you hunting from a quad?

I understand that. But the OP asked if anyone used them for stalking.

If you look at it that way you could get into trouble driving to your permission.

The quad is used to get to where the deer are, then people get off the quads and the hunt begins.

Its not how I would look at it that matters, its how a Ranger would look at.

the ranger isnt stupid either and know people use quads to pull deer from rought spots and mountain lands with no real excess.
so unless he sees you sitting on a quad and shooting a deer you will be fine. as their is alot of draging to these animals if you cant get close where you shot them with ur 4x4.

Access to remote areas and drag only.
Now that you mention it we could use them for fox hunting and leave the horses at home......:D

we only have fallow and any of the sika ive seen on here are much bigger. from a bit of research online the average sika is bigger.

anyone who can shoot both care to answer that?

Never seean a sika but have shot both reds and fallow and the sika others were talking about seemed to be somewhere in between the red and fallow
