Audi A4 Starting Problem

Ive bought a 2003 1.9 tdi (avf) A4 recently the car is driving perfectly and only passed it's NCT a few days ago but

Sometimes I could be driving along and the car would just cut out there and then on the road, when I turn the key to start the car again the glow plugs don't light up and no matter how many times you turn the engine it won't start, If I keep switching the ignition on and off eventually the glow plugs will show again and the car will start and off I go and when it starts back up the Abs light and traction control light will be lit up  but when I turn the car off and start it up again for my next journey these two lights will be gone out, and the car will drive perfectly again until it cuts again :(

has any one any idea what could be causing the car to cut out randomly like that ?

The weather sheild/ battery cover was missing from the car when I bought it, could this maybe not be helping the problem to ?

And also when starting the audi I always wait until 'ok' comes up on the computer and then start it ...I don't think the car will start if you start it before it says 'ok' too, is this the same with all audi 2 of that era ?

    Cheers

    Joe

I have more or less the same problem in my 05 a3!! To the point tonight it climaxed, kinked out, steam coming from the bonnet, I lopen it and my coolant cylinder is bubbling like a kettle, I then carefully take the lid off and everything immediately evaporates and the cylinder is empty. Left my car for 3 hours, filled it up with water - coolant cylinder, drove home fine, however checking the cylinder I notice the water has gone down a lot, I think did I put enough in, so put more water in, tried te start the car and it struggled when it did start the exhaust fumes had huge gushes of smoke that smelled fcuked then my car kinked out, I think my engine could be rightly fcuked up now :( not happy at all

    Thanks for replys

After a lot of googling later I'm now sure it's a relay thats gone in the car..

relay 109 to be exact :D

Bringing it to the garage on saturday :(

    @ git

lucky enough there was no steam coming from my car

hope there is not to much wrong with your car though.

Sounds like the head gasket could be gone if it's leaking coolant but I'm no mechanic.

SOUNDS like same intermittent problem i had with my 04 a4 sport.... 1 start out of 30 it'd not start for love nor money until light in dash disappeared then away ya go, frustrating as hell but after various me garages it was a simple relay
