    Hi all,

I currently work for a company, and am updating my CV as I am expecting redundancy in the next few months, and want to start getting ready for applying for new jobs.

I will get a reference from my own employer no problem, but my question is this?

Is it ok to get references from Clients that Ive worked with over the years? For example, I was the only person from our office working on this one particular project for a school. During the project I built up a good relationship with the school principal, who then recommended me personally (not the company i work for) to another school. so I obviosuly made a good impression with him.

So would it be ok to put this person down as a referee, even though they were not a direct employer of mine?

    Cheers guys.

    Burly

I wouldn't put any referees down on your CV at all for a start.

Then when it does come to the reference checking stage, you can offer them as an option.

Yes that was my intention, but to answer my question, do you think refererences from someone other than a direct employer are ok?

Of course they're ok - who wouldn't want to hear from a satisfied customer!

The only caveat is around your company's code-of-conduct or suchlike. But if it's OK ethically with them, then I don't see why not. (remember you'll be disclosing outside the company that school X is a client of your company. In some industries, that could be a problem. In others it's not)

In my company they wouldn't accept it :( They want information from a reference about time keeping, flexibility, blah blah, it absolutely has to come from someone who supervised you as an employee. Personally I think references like the one you describe say way more about a person, but that's the policy in my place. So it may end up a problem with your new company.
