    Need more info. In what way is it slow? Slow to startup? Slow to launch applications? Is the interface sluggish or unresponsive? Is it only certain applications?

    Try verifying the hard disk in Disk Utility. Also repair permissions.

    Do you have any applications installed that run in the background? To check for potentially rogue processes, open Activity Monitor (in Applications > Utilities) and sort by CPU (you may need to click on the column once or twice so that that it's sorted highest to lowest).

    Whatever you do, don't fall for the ads for MacKeeper that seem to be on every website these days. I did and when I installed their software it actually made my iMac slower

    CCleaner have a mac version now which is free from the app store. Might not do much but it won't hurt to give it a try?

    Tbh I'd recommend steering clear of maintenance apps unless you know exactly what they are doing. They rarely solve performance issues and often do more harm than good. The only type of maintenance I'd recommend is repairing permissions every now and then.

    Don't use ccleaner. It messes with iTunes syncing photos correctly with your iPhone and iPad.

    The most effective way of speeding up a Mac is to buy more RAM. It can be like having a new machine.

    An SSD would make a far bigger difference. But the OP's issue is probably due to something else.

    SSD means solid-state drive. It's a type of flash memory storage with no moving parts that will eventually replace traditional hard disk drives. The MacBook Air has them and they are much much faster. You can install them on most recent MacBooks, but they are expensive and have far less storage.

    OP = original poster, i.e. you. :)
