Just curious, who picks up the tab for students who qualify for free fees? I imagine that the university doesn't do it for free.

It can depend on the course and where you are doing it. Some courses, esp the medical ones like vet science and medicine tend to be more costly to run and this is often reflected in the fees.

Heres a link to the UCD fees page listing the cost of various undergrad courses: http://www.ucd.ie/registry/adminservices/fees/undergraduate2011.htm

Heres a link to DIT fees page:
    http://www.dit.ie/study/mature/support/finance/taxrelief/

Bit of difference. Note that the fees listed on the UCD page also include the registration charge the DIT fees don't.

The dept of education pays the colleges so in effect the taxpayers

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
