    Basically yes, give it a clean first before you do anything.

    I had an EGR Flow code on the ECU of my 1.4 Golf and taking off the EGR and giving it a clean did the trick.

    It may not be the EGR itself thats blocked but the passageway which the EGR pipe connects to on the TB.

    I quote Nissan_Doctor when he advised me about the issue on my car. the advice saved a few €€€'s:)

    "When you remove the pipe its usually at the throttle body end that its clogged. Also the throttle body side of where the pipe goes in can be clogged. I've had to use a screwdriver to poke through the build up it can get so hard."

    I would remove it and give it a proper clean with carb cleaner a stick first and then a toothbrush. You don't want to knock any lumps of the black stuff into your intake manifold.

    thank you for your help it was great advice i took off egr valve and steeped it carb cleaner over night as you said the pipe was almost clogged at trottle body end so i took that and the inlet manifold off and gave them a good clean and that done the trick the car is running perfect.thanks again for your advice.

    Good to hear you got sorted.

    I recon that a huge precentage of EGR valves bought for VW's aren't actually needed.

    OP, I had the same issue a few months back with a Mark IV Golf - cleaned the egr valve with no joy. Ended up ordering a new EGR from a crowd on Ebay for a fraction of what it costs here and problem solved!
    Anyway, have a look at this;

    Apologies for taking so long to get back to you Vinny- I've been off air for the last few days.
    The EGR I sourced was brand new and was approx €95 delivered to my door in Dublin.
    I dealt with them through Ebay, where they trade as theairflowmetercompany;

    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/NEW-EGR-Valve-VW-POLO-1-4-6N2-Exhaust-Gas-RECIRC-/260643435844?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3caf8f3544#ht_6244wt_1066

    If you cant read the part no. off your existing EGR valve, just email them the details of your car and they should be able to sort you out.

    Also, for what it's worth, I wouldn't recommend buying a second hand EGR valve for obvious reasons.
    Hope this helps.

    You certainly weren't joking when you said that particular EGR is hard to source on the net! They're like friggin hen's teeth.
    Anyway, the best I could find was this lot;

    https://www.hcsale.com/shop/030131503F

    Also, it might be worth a phonecall to the likes of GSF in Clondalkin on Monday morning.
    Let us know how you get on.
