Hope this is the right thread.

Trying to watch movies from my laptop to TV via HDMI cable. I have full picture on my laptop but just a black screen on the TV. I can get sound on the telly but no picture. Most files are in .avi or .mkv format. Im running windows vista.

    Any ideas?

If you have your TV manual handy, you could see what the native refresh rate of your tv screen is (60 Hertz, 70 hertz etc.) and make sure your laptop is outputting a signal of the same rate. That's what my problem was when I wasn't getting a picture.

I dont have the TV Manual and I can't seem to change my laptop output rate from 60 Hertz. Its the only option.

Well, ruling aside a Hertz issue, it could also be the resolution. Your TV may not play nicely with whatever resolution your laptop is putting out so could try outputting it at 1024 x 724 or something along those lines and see if that gets you a picture.

try 1024 x768 , or 720x576 resolution, 60mhz is fine for hdtv, my tv is hd uses 60mhz for pc input.
    post the model,ie sony 520lx,

most tv manuals can be read or downloaded on the web,
    eg sony com,support ,tv
Your laptop resolution maybe too high or out of range for your tv.
MY HDTV manual says 60mhz is max refresh rate, DO NOT USE 75MHZ.

Thanks for the info. Tried different resolutions but no joy. Found the manual on the web. Its a LOGIK L22lDVB19 and according to manual to achieve best output set your pc to 1920 x 1080p which is out of range on my laptop. Maybe its a lost cause. Thanks for all the help anyway.

Over HDMI it should auto-negotiate a suitable resolution...the TV tells the computer what resolutions and refresh rates it supports and you can only use those resolutions by default.

You need to give more info, what graphics card have you got and what OS are you running? Are your graphics drivers up to date?

Did you check in the graphics control panel that you are actually using the TV as a display? There is usually options for which display to use (or both mirroring etc).

If you right click on your desktop is there some option for display output?

Alot of the time you will need to tell the laptop that its to use the TV display instead. If its not on the right click try going to
    • Click the Start button and choose Control Panel.
    • Click Personalize, then click Display Settings.
    • Click the monitor icon representing the monitor you are adding to your system. (click identify monitors if unsure and it will dislpay a number on each screen)
    • Uncheck "Extend desktop" if checked.
    • Try Select this is my Main monitor.

Try in xp, graphics propertys, advanced,tv,displays, set the resolution, press fn key plus f5 at the same time, external display on. for xp, or vista,
Go into your “Control Panel” and load up your “Display” properties
Click the “Settings” tab and you will probably still see one monitor depending on what type of connection you used.
Click “Advanced” and then select the tab that corresponds to your “Video Card” in my case it was Geforce 6600 GT.
Here you have all the options for your card. If you are using a Nvidia card, click on n-View Display Settings, otherwise, whichever option shows you multiple display types.

Here you can select Dual-view and Clone, enable and disable displays. Also in the Nvidia control panel, in the tools section is an option to “Force TV detection”.
Which os have you got,xp,vista or windows 7.
fn plus f5 = turn on external display/monitor, or see key fkey with a tv square icon, fn plus that key ,press once ,both keys at the same time.
ATI card may have a tv ,external display tab,in display, advanced
    settings.

I didnt copy your post, you dont mention,fn f5 , or ati, nvidia cards.
IF i wanna use my sony vaio on an external tv,
,i have to use fn plus f5 to activate external displays.
Actually on my vaio ,its fn plus f7 to precise.
I am just trying to help .its not an identical post to your post.
Different laptops may use another f key plus fn to turn on exterenal display.
Any HDTV should be able to show 1024x768 resolution.

    Hey guys,

Continued to fiddle around with display properties etc and eventually clicked on monitor 2 and checked the box to extend my desktop onto this monitor and just dragged the movie over to monitor 2(i.e. TV) and it works! Now I know.
    Thanks for all the help.
