Class 1 Medical Enquiry

    Hi folks

I have my class 1 coming up shortly. I have looked at the Med 160 which is fine but in the family section I could tick quite a few elements but they would hardly be disqualifying if I don't exhibit them surely?

While I have no intention to deceive ( I have already declared an issue ) but the family section being "trivial" as I don't have any of the conditions I am uncertain whether to declare that my family have heart disease, diabetes and a mental illness.

What would you do? Would be honest and tick everything that you know or play dumb and say no to everything assuming they won't investigate.

It's almost like if they are told they are obliged to investigate, whereas what they don't know will not compel them to investigate.

Appreciate any thoughts on this folks.

    Thanking You

Be honest...and dont worry...it's a very laid back process as long as you dont have any history personally! Declare the history for future reference but dont worry..i spent 3 days in hospital with a head injury when I was younger and the Dr just shrugged and said I'd passed the tests in the medical and had a letter from the specialist who took care of me so I was good...I was surprised how little they actually seemed to care!

So dont get worried about it!

    Thanks Suits

I have had to also get a report done by my GP from a condition years ago called perthes of the hip. I was discharged at 14. I am now 29 but they want copies of reports and procedures. I gave my GP my clinical notes from Crumlin when I was there and asked her to generate a report based on the clinical notes and how I am now. Hopefully it will be enough for them....

Everybody's family has some form of history. So don't worry about it. It's your medical not theirs. No one has ever been disqualified medically because their Father had a heart condition.

The only one I ignore is the 'Have you ever been hospitalised' question. Appendix out 25 years ago doesn't really matter anymore.

As per previous, it's your medical not there's . Don't make things complicated.

    Thanks for the feedback

So you think I should be honest about heart disease and mental illness. I know it's my medical but will it not raise eyebrows and warrant further inquiries?

No, why would it? You're not applying for life insurance. My late Father had a heart attack. I list it on the form and it never came up as an issue during any medical. Beside I have plenty of medical glitches of my own for them to worry about.:(

I know you are probably quite right that I indeed am worrying in excess about these things. The nerves are an inherent part of the Class 1 because its Yes or No in one day! It can make or break the dream.

I'll just relax and what is to be will be.

Thanks everyone for your contributions to my post.

It's not make or break! Many defects you may have can be easily worked out if spotted in the medical(eyes etc). There has been a change of management also in the IAA medical division I hear so the exams results and medical processing is far less pedantic of late....

List the heart disease and mental illness, it will not affect you unless your ECG shows something or you clearly appear mentally disturbed.
Pilots are not a race of supermen who must be immune from all disease or physical defect...a general level of health and healthy living will see you over the line comfortably!

    1. Sorry I neglected to mention I am having the examination done at Gatwick. No matter though - same thing really.

2.I am certain I could find some pilots that do indeed believe they are supermen!!

    Thanks Suits

Ps : Sorry I have them marked like that - I made a hash of the reply and quotes tags

    Hi everyone

Small update - as it turns honesty is the best policy. It was all quite relaxed and I walked away with my JAA Class 1 so happy days.

    Thanks
